Overview
Atlassian faced a critical challenge when the storage solution hosting its Bitbucket platform’s 2.3 petabytes of data was being retired. To solve this, Atlassian joined forces with AWS Partner NetApp to migrate that data to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) storage service that used NetApp’s ONTAP file system. The migration was seamless, resulting in no discernable customer impact and no service disruptions. Within a one-month period, Atlassian successfully migrated 60 million repositories, achieving $2.1 million in annual cost savings and reducing application latency by 17 percent.

Opportunity | Retirement Requires a Data Move Without Disruption
Atlassian creates tools that enhance team collaboration and productivity. One of its key offerings is Bitbucket Cloud, a platform for Git repository hosting that integrates with other Atlassian tools to streamline the software-development process. Bitbucket hosts critical source code and development assets, so reliable access is vital for its users to maintain software projects, deploy updates, and collaborate effectively. Bitbucket Cloud’s data resided on NetApp Cloud Volumes Service (CVS), a file storage service that was on a fast track to retirement. Retiring file storage can lead to reduced productivity and increased security vulnerabilities for businesses, resulting in higher operational costs and compliance issues. For customers, this often translates to slower service delivery, accessibility challenges, and heightened privacy concerns. To ensure availability, Atlassian needed to find an alternative data repository—and a way to migrate its data quickly, without interrupting service for its customers.
Bitbucket managed a substantial volume of data, totaling 2.3 petabytes. Due to the nature of Bitbucket’s storage implementation, the data migration was a one-way operation. Migrating data back to CVS wasn’t possible, leaving little room for error. Besides paying for its existing NetApp contract, Atlassian also needed to account for the costs of migrating to a new platform. Paying for two storage solutions simultaneously posed a significant expense.
Atlassian wanted to migrate quickly to minimize customer impact. Bitbucket’s data stability and accessibility are essential for users, so Atlassian aimed to avoid unnecessary downtime. Bitbucket repositories support version-control history and uninterrupted development workflows, and they also provide support for CI/CD pipelines. For many organizations, Bitbucket serves as a system of record, making data stability essential for compliance and auditing purposes. Any downtime or data loss could result in missed deadlines, frustrated developers, and potential security risks. Additionally, it raised the risk of breaking service level agreements (SLAs) or attracting negative media attention due to the loss of customer data.

NetApp came up with a process that was safe and effective, and it resulted in zero customer impact.”

Senior Engineering Manager, Atlassian
Solution | A Proven Partner Provides a Cost-Effective Migration
Atlassian wanted to maintain its strong partnership with NetApp, its existing data storage provider. “NetApp ONTAP had met the needs of Bitbucket for a very long time,” said Matt Orlove, senior engineering manager at Atlassian. “It was an obvious first choice.” The company was also interested in more fully deploying AWS capabilities to improve scalability, flexibility, and security. Atlassian was already using AWS services, such as AWS CloudTrail, for enhanced security monitoring and auditing, which would complement any new AWS solutions. Fortuitously, AWS and NetApp had jointly developed an innovative cloud storage solution: Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. The fully managed, shared storage service is powered by NetApp’s ONTAP file system and provides a like-for-like storage experience on AWS. It combines NetApp’s ONTAP operating system with the simplicity and scalability of AWS, making it easier for organizations to maximize enterprise-grade file storage in the cloud. The solution also offers a familiar and intuitive user experience, similar to traditional NetApp systems, helping users be productive right away. This presented a compelling option for Atlassian: migrating to a new storage solution on AWS with a partner it knew and trusted. Added Orlove, “With ONTAP as the new solution’s operating system, the NetApp-to-NetApp replication would make our data migration straightforward and efficient.”
As a participating AWS Partner, NetApp used resources from the AWS ISV Workload Migration Program (WMP) to support and streamline Atlassian’s migration to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. The program’s benefits would help Atlassian complete its migration faster and reduce migration costs. Christine Manesis, ISV partner GTM manager for the WMP, noted, “AWS makes substantial investments in resources and programs to reduce migration risk and improve migration success for our customers.”
Once the solution, partner, and funding were identified, Atlassian wanted assurance that its customers would experience little to no disruption during the data migration. To do this, NetApp used the ONTAP-native SnapMirror data replication capability, allowing Atlassian to easily replicate its data from NetApp CVS to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. Since Atlassian was transferring data between NetApp storage environments, SnapMirror provided asynchronous updates and block-level replications. This allowed Atlassian to cutover repositories in a phased manner, with limited downtime and minimal disruption. An incremental migration also helped optimize costs, letting Atlassian configure file systems and use SnapMirror as needed. Atlassian could also first copy data to an inexpensive storage tier to reduce immediate storage costs, then promote data to the performance tier. This approach allowed Atlassian to balance cost, performance, and migration efficiency while maintaining the flexibility to optimize data storage based on actual usage patterns.
Outcome |A New Storage Solution Secures Savings of $2.1 Million
In only one month, NetApp’s professional services team helped Atlassian migrate 60 million repositories and snippets, totaling 2.3 petabytes of data. A big win for Atlassian was the absence of any discernable customer impact—not a single customer-service ticket arrived during the migration. With no degradation in performance, the migration was completely seamless from a Bitbucket customer standpoint. “Major shoutout to NetApp,” added Orlove. “They came up with a process that was safe and effective, and it resulted in zero customer impact.”
Storage tiering is a key feature of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, and it allowed Atlassian to reduce storage costs without application-level changes. Atlassian now saves $2.1 million in year-over-year storage. Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP also provides resilience across multiple Availability Zones to maintain file-system availability and to protect data. The addition of built-in AWS capabilities improved security, reliability, and disaster recovery for Atlassian. With robust security practices, better provisioning, and the automation that Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP provides, Atlassian can employ its resources more strategically. It’s now considering giving more of its engineering teams the autonomy to configure and manage their own file systems, further improving processes and efficiency.
Another major benefit of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is its large metadata cache, which improved latency, reducing Atlassian’s average application response times by 17 percent. This improved the customer experience and enhanced user productivity and satisfaction. The migration also boosted Atlassian’s growth potential. By using Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, it can more easily expand into any AWS Region to support business demands. Atlassian can now accommodate Bitbucket customers that have data residency requirements, storing data in locations where customers operate and opening the door to new region-specific users.
