AI-Powered Delivery Vans

AWS is enabling new features in Amazon deliveries vehicles to make them easier and safer for drivers

State-of-the-art delivery vehicle

Rivian electric vehicles are packed with industry-leading safety, navigation, and design features that protect drivers and pedestrians. With the help of AWS services, Amazon has rolled out many first-of-its-kind embedded technologies into its delivery van fleet, creating seamless integration between delivery workflows, vehicles, and drivers.

Vision-assisted package retrieval

Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR) is an AI-powered solution that eliminates the need for delivery drivers to spend time organizing packages by stops, reading labels, or manually checking key identifiers. With VAPR, drivers simply look for a green light, grab the package, and go, making the delivery process faster and more efficient. VAPR uses Amazon Robotics Identification (AR-ID), a form of computer vision originally developed for fulfillment centers, to automatically identify items during inventory stow or pick operations. The technology was optimized for an in-van environment, paired with specially designed automotive light projectors and cameras, and integrated with the van's delivery route navigation system.

Fleet Edge

Fleet Edge is a suite of IoT devices designed to keep up with the rapidly changing road environment by capturing road changes in real time, so Delivery Associates have fewer disruptions during their delivery experience. Fleet Edge consists of an in-vehicle computer, street-view camera, and GPS receiver that work together to detect changes in the road environment and automatically update navigation systems. Fleet Edge uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to scan roads for changes while ensuring privacy through automatic blurring of personally identifiable information.

Amazon delivery glasses

Amazon delivery glasses are made for Delivery Associates that improve safety and the driver’s experience. The Amazon delivery glasses assist the Delivery Associates in navigating, scanning, and capturing proof of delivery without ever pulling out their phone. They act as a trusted companion—freeing Delivery Associates' hands, lifting their line of sight, and seamlessly sensing the environment to guide them through every step of the delivery.

Delivery innovation built with AWS Services

VAPR is taking several AWS technologies on the road

Computer vision

VAPR uses a computer vision solution built with Amazon SageMaker AI that can process the in-van environment and locate and decipher multiple bar codes in real-time under various lighting conditions and package characteristics.

AI processing at the edge

Instead of sending all video and sensor data to the cloud, VAPR uses AWS IoT Greengrass to secure local communication between the VAPR system, cameras, projectors, and navigation systems in the van, so that the image analysis happens directly on the VAPR device within the van.
