Opportunity

Guiding "Responsible" Innovation in the Life Sciences Industry with Generative AI

In life sciences, generative AI is transforming drug discovery, enhancing business insights, and improving patient interactions and employee training. Bayer China, as a pioneer in the digital transformation, is launching generative AI innovations to address the following challenges faced by its medical representatives:

  • Enhancing Training Flexibility and Effectiveness: Traditional training methods for medical representatives are often time-consuming, costly, and lack of sufficient customization.
  • Innovation Grounded in Compliance: Bayer China places the highest priority on safety and compliance, ensuring that all generative AI innovations are confined within a secure and manageable application framework.

During the evaluation process conducted by Bayer China's Digital Transformation and IT team, Amazon Web Services (AWS) stood out for the breadth of its services and high performance and for its excellent support for complex AI applications. Ultimately, Bayer China selected AWS for the implementation of Dr. Bei.

Solution

Generative AI x Data-Driven: Shaping Intelligent Training Experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Bayer China has built the Dr.Bei training system with generative AI technology at its core. Through intelligent dialogue and personalized evaluation, it improves training efficiency, reshapes the training experience for pharmaceutical medical representatives, and injects momentum into talent development and business innovation.

Intelligent Dialogue, Igniting New Vitality in Training

Dr. Bei is an intelligent conversational bot built on the Claude large language model from Amazon Bedrock. It simulates doctors to engage in natural language voice interactions with medical representatives, helping them to quickly immerse themselves in scenarios and conduct highly realistic, hands-on practice sessions.

Furthermore, the system leverages Amazon Lambda for serverless, elastic scaling to effortlessly support 450 to 1,000 concurrent users. Amazon API Gateway manages traffic and optimizes resources, guaranteeing fluid conversations during high RPM (Requests Per Minute) peaks.

Dr. Bei offers medical representatives 14 different visit scenarios to choose from. Compared to traditional one-on-one role-play coaching, it has saved 6,000-7,000 hours of training time for 1,000 medical reps and trainers, boosted practice and coaching efficiency by over 50%, and significantly improved both the quality and speed of training.

Security Compliance, Solidifying System Foundation

Bayer China adheres to industry regulations for security and data traceability, backed by Amazon Web Services' (AWS) 143 global compliance certifications. Through Amazon Landing Zone, the company securely manages data access to meet its compliance requirements. Furthermore, Bayer China advances its business intelligence within a compliant framework through Amazon Bedrock which enables secure access to large language models.

Dr.Bei took only 72 days from Proof of Concept(PoC) to official launch. Upon launch, it quickly covered 450 users and rapidly expanded to over 1,000 users within 6 months, widely welcomed by pharmaceutical medical representatives. After implementation, it has helped 1,000 medical representatives save 6,000-7,000 hours of training time, with role-play coaching efficiency increased by over 50%. This innovative solution completes the "Learn-Practice-Evaluation" training loop.

Following its exceptional performance in the China region, the system has commenced a global launch process. Deployment is now steadily underway in the European region and is being actively advanced in several other key regions across Asia and beyond to build a standardized, world-class intelligent training system, demonstrating its compelling value as a global solution.
