Kaia Health Uses AWS to Offer Its Digital Health Applications Worldwide
Kaia Health migrated its digital health applications to AWS for a scalable, global infrastructure. Kaia Health, a healthcare company that provides digital therapies for back pain and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, already had DiGA certification in Germany, but it needed scalable infrastructure that could assist in meeting data privacy regulations in multiple regions. By using AWS KMS, Kaia Health can encrypt its data to help comply with data protection regulations in various countries. On AWS, Kaia Health gained scalability, reduced maintenance, and optimized costs. Now, it can scale globally and help more patients.
Overview
What if your doctor could prescribe a digital therapy to treat your back pain, and your health insurance covered the cost? The German Digital Healthcare Act laid the groundwork for this innovative scenario, and German healthcare startup Kaia Health is a certified DiGA (digitale Gesundheitsanwendung, or prescribable digital health application) provider. Kaia Health offers digital therapeutic applications for back pain and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to more than 650,000 users globally. Patients can use Kaia Health’s apps anytime, anywhere and get personalized physical exercises, relaxation techniques, and educational content. Plus, Kaia Health’s proprietary computer vision technology provides near real-time feedback on exercise techniques.
To make its apps available worldwide, Kaia Health needed a global, scalable infrastructure that was compliant with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and HIPAA. Kaia Health chose Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its cloud services and infrastructure. “On AWS, we gained access to more innovative technologies,” says Dennis Hermann, head of Europe at Kaia Health. “It offers us high stability, resilience, and accessibility.”
