From "seeing" to "understanding": How generative AI is redefining the era of computer vision

The advent of generative AI is transforming the camera industry. Cameras have evolved into smart terminals capable of parsing scenes and reasoning over events, making a pivotal moment for the global security sector. In this context, the ability to deploy AI quickly, accurately, and cost-effectively has become a key differentiator.

Kami Vision is among the early adopters of generative AI technologies. Its intelligent camera solutions have reached over 10 million users across more than 17,000 cities in 168 countries. By leveraging cutting-edge computer vision technologies and advanced algorithms, Kami Vision continues to expand its application scenarios and global footprint.

In the process of implementing global expansion and product intelligence, the company faces multiple challenges. Balancing the cost, speed, and accuracy of video analysis remains difficult. Traditional video analysis often relies on frame-by-frame image extraction, which is complex, inefficient, and resource-intensive. Developing generative AI-powered video analysis apps involves high technical complexity and long development cycles, making it difficult to support frequent verification and rapid iteration. In addition, as the security industry places greater emphasis on user privacy, companies must address increasingly complex and dynamic data compliance requirements across different countries, which raises the bar for both system architecture and operational compliance.

“We chose to work with AWS because its generative AI offerings provide high price-performance, a flexible choice of models, and extensive experience in global compliance deployment,” said Matt Yan, Head of Product, Software Division, Kami Vision.

Solution

Improve video processing efficiency and reduce costs with AWS’s proprietary foundation model

To enhance user experience and product intelligence, Kami Vision integrates generative AI into its camera solutions. This enables value-added services such as video question answering (VQA) and event notifications for scenarios including home security and elder care. The solutions deliver capabilities of intelligent video understanding and real-time response, helping Kami Vision win user trust and strengthen brand recognition.

To enhance the intelligent capabilities of its products, Kami Vision evaluated and compared multiple foundation models, and ultimately selected Amazon Nova Lite on Amazon Bedrock. Amazon Nova Lite delivers high cost-efficiency and outstanding performance in keyframe recognition and inference, making it well-suited for large-scale consumer-facing deployments. Compared with traditional methods that rely on extracting and analyzing individual video frames, this model directly analyzes video, eliminating the image conversion process. This significantly reduces inference latency and improves inference accuracy.

Using Amazon Nova Lite, Kami Vision has reduced token consumption per inference to 20% of the original and inference costs to 63% of the original, while maintaining a 94% video recognition accuracy, significantly improving the overall cost efficiency.

Amazon Nova Lite supports multimodal inputs, including images, text, and video, and offers the prompt optimization capability. The model maintains reliable recognition performance even on compressed or low-resolution images. Compared to models that can only process high-quality image inputs, Amazon Nova Lite offers greater performance and improved cost-efficiency. It also provides robust multilingual capabilities, aligning with Kami Vision’s global expansion goals.

Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed service that offers multiple high-performance foundation models with a single API, enabling enterprises to flexibly invoke different models and seamlessly integrate AI across various development stages. With Amazon Bedrock, Kami Vision can choose foundation models best suited for use cases of small and medium-sized enterprises and quickly deploy them to production. Flexible prompt configuration enables the product team to improve response accuracy and consistency during prototype verification and post-launch iterations.

AWS services and products help Kami Vision significantly accelerate the development cycle — from identifying business needs to delivering solutions. This reduces technical barriers to AI adoption, enabling faster deployment of generative AI and continuous innovation on user-facing services.

As Kami Vision expands globally, it faces a complex landscape of data privacy and processing regulations that vary across countries. Security products that handle sensitive data, such as video and images, must strictly comply with regional regulations to ensure that data processing remains secure, controlled, and compliant. In mature markets such as North America and Europe, stricter regulations on data processing and storage impose higher compliance requirements on security solutions.

AWS’s global infrastructure and regional compliance expertise help Kami Vision expand its international footprint and implement solution deployment in markets such as North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Amazon Bedrock provides robust compliance controls and detailed documents, offering Kami Vision clear governance guardrails for integrating generative AI and implementing responsible AI adoption at a global scale.

Business outcomes

Expectations exceeded: Intelligent security solutions launched within one month

Thanks to the high-quality services from AWS, Kami Vision successfully launched value-added services, such as video question answering (VQA) and event notifications powered by Amazon Nova Lite, within just one month. The R&D phase was completed in only two weeks, significantly speeding up the overall delivery.

Throughout the R&D process, AWS offered expert, comprehensive support — from permission setup and model integration to prompt optimization — ensuring smooth project execution. The AWS team was highly responsive to both day-to-day needs and unexpected issues, delivering timely and effective resolutions.

Beyond technical support, AWS consistently provided forward-looking insights and context-aware solution suggestions. Drawing on enterprise-grade reference use cases, AWS helped Kami Vision expand its innovation roadmap and build AI-driven innovation capabilities tailored to specialized domains.

Matt Yan commented, "Our collaboration with AWS has far exceeded our expectations. In addition to rapid deployment and fast feedback responses, AWS also provided us with a strong technical foundation and valuable industry insights, empowering us to build differentiated offerings."

Looking ahead, Kami Vision will continue to deepen its collaboration with AWS to develop more generative AI–powered video solutions and use cases, further enhancing product intelligence and improving user experience.

About Kami Vision

Kami Vision, an intelligent camera solution provider, is committed to the development and innovation of camera products and computer vision technologies. Its products have reached over 10 million users across more than 17,000 cities in 168 countries. Kami Vision holds multiple proprietary patents and features industry-leading capabilities in algorithm design for deep learning, edge computing, driver assistance, and other domains. Its solutions are widely adopted in smart commerce and intelligent mobility scenarios. The Kami camera with the fall detection feature integrates cutting-edge AI fall detection technology, helping families prevent and respond to family member falls. Kami Vision’s product footprint has extended across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Over the past three years, Kami Vision has also achieved strong traction in the B2B elder care market through its KamiCare platform. Today, KamiCare is deployed across assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing facilities in the United States, where it has helped care teams respond faster to incidents, reduce the number and severity of falls, and improve the overall quality of resident care. By delivering accurate, real-time fall detection alerts, KamiCare enables staff to reach residents within minutes, reducing response times dramatically compared to traditional methods. This success in senior living communities has been a critical foundation for Kami Vision’s broader strategy: to bring the same life-saving fall detection technology into private homes, empowering older adults to live independently and safely for as long as possible. Since the launch of Kami Vision’s enhanced AI features in April, the system has seen significant improvements in both accuracy and speed, strengthening its role as a trusted partner for caregivers, families, and healthcare providers.
