What is Application Recovery Controller?
Amazon Application Recovery Controller helps you manage and automate recovery of your applications across AWS Regions and Availability Zones (AZs). These capabilities make it easier to reliably recover applications without the manual steps required by traditional tools and processes.
Benefits
Region Switch is an automated, centralized solution for multi-Region application recovery even across accounts. Region switch allows you to orchestrate the specific steps needed to operate your cross-AWS account application resources out of another AWS Region. It provides dashboards for real-time visibility into the recovery process and gathers data from across resources and accounts required for reporting to regulators and compliance teams. This can save hours of engineering work and eliminate the operational overhead previously required to write failover scripts, create custom dashboards, and manually gather evidence of a successful recovery. Region Switch supports failover and failback for active/passive multi-Region approaches, and shift-away and return for active/active multi-Region approaches.
With Application Recovery Controller, you can use zonal shift to quickly mitigate impairments for multi-AZ applications. Zonal autoshift allows you to safely and automatically shift your application’s traffic away from an AWS Availability Zone when AWS identifies a potential failure affecting that Availability Zone due to events such as power and networking outages. Zonal shift and zonal autoshift can be used with applications that use Application Load Balancers, Network Load Balancers, EC2 Auto Scaling Groups, and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes clusters.
Application Recovery Controller continually monitors resource quotas, capacity, and configuration, and suggests remediation when changes are made that would affect your ability to fail over to a standby replica. With configurable safety rules, you can prevent operators or automated policies from taking recovery actions that might lead to unexpectedly long recovery times.

Use Region switch for multi-Region applications or zonal shift and zonal autoshift for multi-AZ applications to recover from failures impacting your application.
Automatically evaluate your Region switch plan, including verification of IAM permissions, resource configurations, and running capacity. View warnings in the Region switch console, or by using the API, or configure Region switch to send evaluation warnings with Amazon EventBridge.
