Introducing Five New Amazon EC2 Bare Metal Instances

Posted on: Feb 13, 2019

Starting today, five new Amazon EC2 bare metal instances are available. Amazon EC2 bare metal instances provide your applications with direct access to the Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor and memory resources of the underlying server. These instances are ideal for workloads that require access to the hardware feature set (such as Intel® VT-x), for applications that need to run in non-virtualized environments for licensing or support requirements, or for customers who wish to use their own hypervisor.

Bare metal instances allow EC2 customers to run applications that benefit from deep performance analysis tools, specialized workloads that require direct access to bare metal infrastructure, legacy workloads not supported in virtual environments, and licensing-restricted Tier 1 business critical applications. Bare metal instances also make it possible for customers to run virtualization secured containers such as Clear Linux Containers. Workloads on bare metal instances continue to take advantage of all the comprehensive services and features of the AWS Cloud, such as Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).

The five new bare metal instances are m5.metal, m5d.metal, r5.metal, r5d.metal, and z1d.metal. M5 instances offers a balance of compute, memory, and networking resources for a broad range of workloads including web and application servers, back-end servers for enterprise applications, gaming servers, caching fleets, and app development environments. R5 instances are well suited for memory intensive applications such as high performance databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, mid-size in-memory databases, real time big data analytics, and other enterprise applications. In addition, M5d and R5d instances have local storage, offering up to 3.6 TB of local NVMe-based SSDs. z1d instances provide both high compute performance and high memory, which is ideal for electronic design automation (EDA), gaming, and certain relational database workloads with high per-core licensing costs.

m5.metal instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (N. California and Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Paris, and Stockholm), and Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo) AWS regions

m5d.metal instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris, and Stockholm), and Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, and Sydney) AWS regions.

r5.metal instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (N. California and Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris, and Stockholm), Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Seoul, and Singapore), and AWS GovCloud (US-West) AWS regions.

r5d.metal instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (N. California), Europe (Frankfurt, Paris, and Stockholm), Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Seoul, and Singapore), and AWS GovCloud (US-West) AWS regions.

z1d.metal instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California and Oregon), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Singapore and Tokyo) AWS regions.

These new Bare Metal instances can be purchased as On-Demand instances, Reserved instances (3-Yr, 1-Yr, and Convertible), or as Spot instances.
