Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering now supports automatic data archiving to further reduce storage costs by up to 95% when objects become rarely accessed over long periods of time. The S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class is the first and only cloud storage that automatically optimizes customers’ storage costs. S3 Intelligent-Tiering delivers milliseconds latency and high throughput performance for frequently and infrequently accessed data in the Frequent and Infrequent Access Tiers, and now the lowest storage costs in the cloud when data is rarely accessed in the Deep Archive Access Tier.
S3 Intelligent-Tiering delivers automatic cost savings by moving objects between four access tiers when access patterns change. S3 Intelligent-Tiering stores objects in four access tiers: two low latency access tiers optimized for frequent and infrequent access, and now two opt-in archive access tiers designed for asynchronous access and optimized for rare access at low costs. Objects uploaded or transitioned to S3 Intelligent-Tiering are automatically stored in the Frequent Access tier. S3 Intelligent-Tiering works by monitoring access patterns and moving the objects that have not been accessed in 30 consecutive days to the Infrequent Access tier. Once you have activated one or both of the archive access tiers, S3 Intelligent-Tiering will automatically move objects that haven’t been accessed for 90 consecutive days to the Archive Access tier and after 180 consecutive days of no access to the Deep Archive Access tier. If the objects are accessed later, S3 Intelligent-Tiering moves the objects back to the Frequent Access tier.
S3 Intelligent-Tiering optimizes storage costs when access patterns change, without any analysis, operational overhead, or retrieval fees. For a small monthly object monitoring and automation fee, S3 Intelligent-Tiering monitors access patterns and automatically moves objects that have not been accessed to lower cost access tiers. S3 Intelligent-Tiering is designed for 99.9% availability and 99.999999999% durability. Like other Amazon S3 storage classes, S3 Intelligent-Tiering supports features like S3 Inventory to verify the access tier of objects, and S3 Replication to replicate data to any AWS Region. It is the ideal storage class for datasets with unknown storage access patterns, like new applications, or unpredictable access patterns, like data lakes.
You can activate one or both of the S3 Intelligent-Tiering archive access tiers using the Amazon S3 API, CLI, or with a few simple clicks in the S3 management console. S3 Intelligent-Tiering, and the new archive access tiers, is available today in all AWS Regions, including the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, the AWS China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet, and the AWS China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD.
