AWS Storage Gateway adds a new gateway type, Amazon FSx File Gateway, providing low-latency on-premises access to fully managed file shares in the cloud. Customers that want to take advantage of fully managed cloud file storage, but require low latency for their users and applications, can now easily extend Amazon FSx for Windows File Server into their existing on-premises environment.
Many on-premises desktop applications and workloads are latency-sensitive, which can lead to slower performance when directly accessing files from remote locations. Amazon FSx File Gateway optimizes your on-premises access by maintaining a local cache of frequently accessed data. This capability enables faster performance and reduced data transfer cost for file-based workloads such as user shares, documents, and content management.
To get started, launch the Amazon FSx File Gateway as a virtual machine with a few clicks in the AWS Storage Gateway Management Console, or you can order an AWS Storage Gateway hardware appliance and deploy in your on-premises environment. Amazon FSx File Gateway is available in all commercial AWS Regions where Amazon FSx is available including AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, and the Amazon China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet, and the Amazon China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD.
