Amazon Kinesis Data Analytics for Apache Flink now supports UpdateApplicationMaintenanceConfiguration in preview. Amazon Kinesis Data Analytics periodically patches the underlying infrastructure of applications with OS and container-image security updates to meet AWS compliance and security goals during the default maintenance windows in each region. You can use UpdateApplicationMaintenanceConfiguration via the CLI or the API to choose your preferred maintenance window start times for an application.
Maintenance for your application’s infrastructure might occur at any time during the maintenance window. However, the downtime experienced by your application will be in the 10s of seconds when the application status changes to “MAINTENANCE”. Actual downtime depends on your application state. Amazon Kinesis Data Analytics for Apache Flink will automatically recover application state from the latest checkpoint or snapshot. To minimize downtime, ensure you are taking snapshots and frequent checkpoints regularly as recommended in the fault tolerance section under Best Practices.
