"The cloud gives customers an opportunity...of automation and resulting visibility [which] should have every understaffed or underfunded security team scrambling to get to the cloud as quickly as possible."

Getting to know
Clarke Rodgers, AWS Enterprise Strategist
Clarke's goals
As an AWS Enterprise Security Strategist, Clarke is passionate about helping executives explore how the cloud can transform security and working with them to find the right enterprise solutions.
Clarke's AWS beginnings
Clarke joined AWS in 2016, but his experience with the advantages of AWS security started well before he became part of the team. In his role as CISO for a multinational life reinsurance provider, he oversaw a strategic division’s all-in migration to AWS in 2015. At a time when some companies avoided moving to the cloud because of strict security requirements, their migration was actually driven by security requirements, with a goal of achieving Service Organization Control (SOC) 2 accreditation to demonstrate the company’s protection of its very sensitive personal data.
The move was a resounding success. Not only did the division receive the accreditation, but the switch resulted in higher availability and operational agility, increasing security while reducing operational overhead.
Clarke's expertise
Now, Clarke brings his AWS migration experience and more than 20 years in security, risk, and compliance roles to guide enterprise customers in their cloud transformation journeys.
Clarke knows firsthand that moving to the cloud is not trivial. But he firmly believes that most organizations can be more secure in the cloud than in their own data centers. He’s an evangelist for helping enterprises achieve business, IT, and security outcomes that ultimately free them up to focus on their core business.
Clarke's history
Clarke attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and began his career in a different type of security — serving as a United States Marine. Clarke resides in San Diego, CA.
Security leadership requires a holistic approach across physical and digital domains — and Amazon's diverse business portfolio presents unique challenges and opportunities in both realms. In this interview with Steve Schmidt, Amazon's Chief Security Officer, we'll explore how Amazon implements security across AWS, amazon.com, Whole Foods, Prime Video, Kuiper and more.
Featuring AWS Enterprise Strategists Miriam McLemore, Chris Hennesey, and Clarke Rodgers
The concept of 'business resilience' traditionally centers on an organization's capacity to handle failures and endure disruptions. However, truly resilient businesses go beyond mere response strategies; they proactively design and rigorously test plans to prevent such setbacks. In fact, the most resilient businesses don’t just withstand disruption, they create it.
In this discussion, AWS Enterprise Strategists Miriam McLemore, Chris Hennesey, and Clarke Rodgers will explore the notion of business resilience through the lens of a 'disruptor’s mindset.' They will highlight how embracing innovation not only fosters a competitive edge, but also propels the entire industry forward.
A conversation with Dimple Ahluwalia and Ryan Dougherty of IBM and Clarke Rodgers of AWS
New research from IBM and AWS shows that 76% of generative AI projects aren't being secured. Join us for a conversation with Dimple Ahluwalia and Ryan Dougherty of IBM and Clarke Rodgers of AWS as we dig into the research findings to answer why 70% of executives say their organizations are prioritizing innovation over security. Listen in and learn what it takes to securely implement generative AI technologies.
Over the last several months, one of the most common discussions I have had with members of the C-Suite is around how to effectively report and/or discuss cybersecurity with the organization’s Board of Directors (BoD) and/or Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Here are five tips a CISO (or other CxO responsible for cybersecurity) can use to maximize their limited time with the BoD.

Amazon Web Services customers have many services to contemplate, and perhaps integrate into their cloud footprint, irrespective of where they are in their cloud journey. The relentless pace of innovation continues to be one of the main attractions for customers with AWS as their cloud provider; knowing that new services and features are always coming, customers feel confident that many (if not all) of their organization’s needs can be fulfilled by one or more AWS products. Customer CISOs (or their respective teams) may want to take the time to ensure that they are well versed with all AWS services because there may be a security, risk, or compliance objective that can be met, even if a service doesn’t fall into the “Security, Identity, and Compliance” category.

Building a strong security culture is something that requires constant care and feeding. It is a company-wide effort, not just an effort limited to the security or information technology teams. It goes beyond annual security awareness training for employees.
