AWS for Industries
AWS lights up the cloud at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2023
SCTE is the preeminent professional organization supporting the advancement of the cable industry and technologies. The organization hosts its annual technology conference, the Cable-Tec Expo, in Denver on October 16-19. AWS will be participating and has prepared a fantastic set of demos and technical forum talks for our cable industry customers and partners.
Generative AI is a hot topic and has potential to have a profound impact across the telecommunications industry. AWS has put together a dedicated generative AI session on Tuesday, October 17 at 4:15pm in the Technical Training Theater (T3) inside the Exhibit Hall. In this session, we will discuss the results from a global service provider market study, share insights on potential gen AI applications in the telecom space, progressively dive deeper into the technology itself, and wrapping it all up with a live demo.
With many cable operators running multiple access networks including DOCSIS, fiber/passive optical network (PON), and 5G, convergence has been a hot topic in the cable industry in the last five years. Many attendees will remember me (Jennifer Andreoli-Fang) in my previous role at CableLabs as a senior leader in the cable and mobile space. Come to the cloud workshop on Wednesday 2pm in Room 103 to hear me talk about a joint proposal with Cisco on a new DOCSIS architecture, why it’s a good idea, how it can enable convergence and benefit from cloud, and how to implement it. I will also be moderating the private 5G workshop on Wednesday 3:45 in Room 111 that showcases private wireless use cases from thought leaders from Charter Communications (co-authored with AWS Principal Solutions Architect Ammar Latif), as well as Rogers Communications.
The AWS for Telecom team has several years of experience building 5G networks on the cloud. This year, we made progress leveraging our experience from building 5G on AWS and applying them to wireline networks like DOCSIS and PON. We’ve partnered with three iconic network equipment providers in the cable space. AWS and Ciena worked together to run portions of their virtual broadband network gateway (vBNG) on AWS. We will share the design and prototyping results, as well as targeted use cases in the Ciena booth. Interested in diving deep into the architecture and solution? Jim Huang, Principal Solutions Architect from AWS will be presenting the nitty gritty in the workshop focused on fiber network resiliency on Thursday 8am in Room 103.
In the Casa booth, AWS and Casa Systems will jointly demonstrate a proof of concept running Casa’s vBNG control plane on AWS and leveraging hybrid cloud. AWS has also worked with Harmonic to jointly develop a CableOS disaster recovery solution, to be shown in Harmonic booth, that enables service providers to reduce CapEx while improving network resiliency.
