New KLAS Research Report indicates AWS Healthcare customers almost unanimously point to two distinct outcomes of working with AWS – time and cost savings

Healthcare and life sciences organizations today are looking to increase the pace of innovation, unlock the potential of health data, and develop more personalized approaches to therapeutic development and care. Cloud adoption has become vital to expand the role of IT operations, data security, and improve the overall patient experience; yet, according to KLAS Research, “compared to other industries, healthcare has lagged in adoption of – though not interest in – cloud technology and services.”

The global pandemic of 2020 changed things, officially putting everyone on notice. Healthcare organizations are now accelerating their journey to the cloud and are increasingly motivated to modernize at speed and at scale. But, they’re faced with critical questions as their journey advances. How can provider and payor organizations get started, what benefits and challenges can they expect, and which cloud provider can best meet their needs?

To help address these questions, KLAS published AWS in Healthcare 2021. This report – which focuses on Amazon Web Services (AWS) – is the first in a series examining the healthcare customer experience with cloud providers. Insights on AWS, which KLAS indicates has historically generated the most interest from healthcare organizations, come from 11 organizations identified by AWS as leading customers.

Customers reported shorter project timelines, reduced cost, and improved security as the top three outcomes achieved with AWS. KLAS noted, “Across use cases, nearly all interviewed customers have saved time or money thanks to AWS. Some note that without AWS, they could not have undertaken their projects because of the massive computing power needed or the number of patients requiring outreach.”

AWS achieved an overall performance score of 89.1, with all interviewed customers indicating AWS is part of their long-term cloud plans. Clients in this report sample rate product quality and development as key strengths of the AWS portfolio. By leveraging the underlying infrastructure and platform components, organizations feel better equipped to nimbly take on and develop new projects. All interviewed clients would purchase the AWS offering again, and all plan to expand what they are currently doing in the cloud by developing more cloud-native apps or moving more applications to the cloud, replacing legacy on-premises technology.

So, why choose AWS? According to KLAS, “AWS was one of the first cloud providers to be leveraged in healthcare, and in previous KLAS research, prospective clients identified AWS as a perceived market leader for core infrastructure and platform services. These respondents felt other vendors’ offerings weren’t yet ready to meet healthcare’s IaaS or PaaS needs.”

One customer summarized, “This solution enables us to quickly scale our computing resources up and down, which is a huge benefit from both a capacity and cost perspective. We use the resources that we need when we need them, and we only pay for what we use.”
