Austin Independent School District

 Austin Independent School District

 Texas, USA

 Champion since 2023

The Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) educates more than 73,000 students and embraces 116 diverse school communities in one of the fastest-growing metroplexes in the country. Austin ISD has relied on a cloud roadmap to help sustain and improve operations in the face of growing financial constraints. Austin ISD has turned to the cloud to bring cost savings, efficiency, and elasticity to their IT spend and applications as they grapple with declining student enrollment and decreasing IT budgets.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Austin ISD used Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide essential resiliency. The district relied on AWS AppStream remote access to support teachers and students during remote learning. The importance of resiliency was demonstrated again in early 2021, when a crippling winter storm led to power outages throughout the region. In response, the district turned to virtual machines hosted in the AWS Cloud to ensure business continuity until local services were restored.
