AWS Announces Amazon CloudFront Edge Location in Argentina

The announcement is part of Amazon investment in Latin America

Amazon CloudFront locations offer all organizations in the region faster content delivery and added cybersecurity protection

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA June 27, 2019—Today, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced the decision to invest in an Amazon CloudFront Edge location in Buenos Aires, Argentina, operational in 2019. This new Edge location provides low latency and high data transfer rates to AWS customers who will be able to deliver dynamic and static web content to end users, while providing the full suite of benefits provided by Amazon CloudFront, including deep integration with compute, storage and security services like Amazon S3 Transfer Acceleration, Lambda@Edge, AWS Shield, and AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF). The new Edge location will deliver to customers in the region an improved experience for their end users, including faster content delivery and added cybersecurity protection.

“We are thrilled to continue expanding our presence and investments in Argentina, bringing even more advanced cloud technologies to customers throughout Latin America,” said Jeffrey Kratz, AWS General Manager for Public Sector in Latin America, Canada & Caribbean. “AWS has a long term commitment with Argentina and has been working with the country to deliver the best on cloud services for businesses of all sizes and areas. From the most innovative start-ups and enterprises, such as Mercado Libre, Pampa Energia and Etermax, to the public sector organizations in areas as education, for example Universidad Siglo 21, all will be able to enjoy the benefits of our new Edge location infrastructure as they accelerate their cloud adoption.”

Amazon CloudFront is a fast content delivery network (CDN) service that securely delivers data, videos, applications, and APIs to customers globally with low latency, high transfer speeds, all within a developerfriendly environment. The service is also integrated with AWS, including physical locations, which are directly connected to the AWS global infrastructure, as well as software that works seamlessly with AWS’s services. Customers can start using the service today and could see performance improvements of up to 90 percent in reduced latency for their content delivery as a result of this launch.

Amazon CloudFront uses a global network of 169 Points of Presence (including 158 Edge Locations and 11 Regional Edge Caches) in 68 cities across 30 countries. The higher accessibility to services and improved and faster user experience with Amazon CloudFront will help in driving the usage of more web applications across the Latin America, including eCommerce, mobile banking, media, entertainment, and government services. Like other AWS technologies, Amazon CloudFront is a self-service, pay-per-use offering, requiring no long term commitments or minimum fees and can be used either standalone or in combination with other AWS services, to provide additional benefits to customers.

The Edge location announcement in Argentina celebrates the collaborative work that AWS has been doing with the local government since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2017 and the continuous investments in the country, such as the AWS programs in education and the start-up community. «This announcement is a milestone that reflects the mutual work we have been developing between the public and private sectors in Argentina in relation to the digital transformation of the country. It is in line with the vision that the Modernization Government Secretariat has been promoting to integrate digitalization efforts of government, industry and citizens.” celebrates Andrés Ibarra, Government Secretary of Modernization.

AWS commitment to Argentina shows the relevance of the country in the company’s plans in the region and follows the common engagement between both Amazon and Argentina’s administration. A very important investment has been the delivery of Programs such as AWS Educate, www.awseducate.com, offered in Argentina 26 educational institutions, having enrolled over 700 students and educators. AWS Educate offers online cloud computing curriculum, hands-on labs and cloud credits. AWS also has a strategic relationship with the Ministry of Modernization and citizens may enroll in AWS Educate through the Pais Digital portal.

AWS enables organizations and governments to focus on their mission and innovation by eliminating the heavy lifting of managing IT so they can dedicate valuable developer resources to what differentiates them. AWS supports the Argentinian Public Sector and enables it to work as a startup, moving fast on innovation through cloud adoption. «From the Argentine Investment Agency, we lead an effort to attract important investments of technology companies to the country. We have been working closely with Amazon Web Services for more than 2 years, and little by little, they begin to materialize their investments in the country”, confirms Andrés Tahta, Executive VicePresident of the Argentina Investment & Trade Promotion Agency. Businesses of all sizes and across all industries, as well as government agencies have integrated cloud into their IT strategies for improved mission reliability, scalability and cost effectiveness.
