Are you interested in writing and evaluating AWS certification exam questions? AWS is searching for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) like you!

We are searching for SMEs to participate in AWS Certification development workshops where you and a group of your peers from AWS, AWS Customers, and AWS Partners develop and evaluate exam questions for future exams, and help ensure the validity of our current and future AWS Certification program.

SMEs participate in multi-day workshops focused on job task analysis, item writing, development, or standards-setting as part of our certification and exam development processes. SMEs may attend workshops held at AWS/Amazon.com corporate offices worldwide in person, or may participate in virtual workshops from their own desks. At each workshop, SMEs receive training on the relevant certification development tasks. SME activities at AWS Certification workshops may include:

  • Deciding/validating the topics an exam will cover and to what extent and deciding eligibility requirements for exam candidates
  • Writing exam questions
  • Reviewing and approving exam questions for technical accuracy
  • Reviewing performance of questions from beta exams and establishing the exam’s passing score

Speak with any AWS Certification Team member, including at an AWS Certification lounge at any AWS Certification event, or send us an email at AWSCertificationSME@Amazon.com. Note: this does not form any commitment and does not guarantee participation in the program. AWS will contact you as needs for SMEs with your expertise arise in our certification development work.

As part of the selection process, potential SMEs may be asked to submit the following: a résumé/CV (required) or LinkedIn profile, relevant publications SMEs may have authored or contributed to (ex. white papers, blogs), sample exam questions created by the SME, and/or references to establish Subject Matter Expertise and qualification for contributing to an AWS Certification exam.

All SMEs must have relevant hands-on AWS experience and strong English writing skills. Practitioner and Associate-level exams require a minimum of one year working on the AWS platform, while Professional- and Specialty-level exams require the equivalent of two years hands-on experience.

For existing certifications, SMEs must be credential-holders in good standing for each given certification. For new certifications, SMEs must hold—at a minimum—a relevant certification at that level plus the equivalent of two to three years hands-on experience with the subject matter of the certification or exam being developed.

  • Recognition as a contributor to an industry-recognized certification program
  • Opportunity to gain insight into AWS services and feature sets
  • Free voucher to take one live AWS exam
  • Networking and travel opportunities
  • Workshop performance metrics feedback
  • AWS SWAG exclusive for SMEs
  • Team dinner provided by AWS
  • Ability to add “Assisted in the development of AWS Certification Examinations by serving as a subject matter expert for the AWS <> Certification Examination” on a resume, LinkedIn page, or in a CV
  • Gain experience in the exam development process, broadening your skill set

Once you have been confirmed for a workshop, AWS will provide airfare and hotel. AWS will also provide breakfast and lunch at the workshops, as well as one group dinner. All other costs will be the responsibility of each participating SME.

If you have further questions on the AWS Certification SME Program, or would like to express interest in the program but didn’t get the chance to speak to us at an AWS event, please feel free to contact us at any time at AWSCertificationSME@amazon.com.
