Discontinuation
Q: What is the timing for the Lookout for Vision discontinuation?
Effective October 10, 2024, new customers will no longer have access to the service. Active customers will be able to continue to use the service normally until October 31, 2025. Customers have until that time to move their application to an alternative solution and migrate their data off of Lookout for Vision. After October 31, 2025, any cloud application that tries to access Lookout for Vision will no longer work.
Q: How will existing customers be impacted?
Existing customers can continue to use the service normally until October 31, 2025. After that, cloud applications that try to access Lookout for Vision will no longer work. Edge applications running Lookout for Vision will continue to run after the cloud service is discontinued, but will not be able to be updated with new model training.
Q: What alternatives should I explore?
AWS offers a range of computer vision and AI/ML services which can be used as an alternative to Lookout for Vision. We recommend customers look at Amazon SageMaker (including pre-trained models that are available in SageMaker JumpStart) to replace Lookout for Vision models or evaluate if Amazon Bedrock can be used to support their use case. The AWS Partner Network also have several solutions available form partners with specific Computer Vision for Quality Insights expertise that customers can consider.
Q: How can I migrate off of Lookout for Vision?
Lookout for Vision supports the ability to export training and test data as images plus a manifest file that can then be used to train a model outside of Lookout for Vision. Customers can then update their application to replace the Lookout for Vision model with an alternative model or service. For more information, see Exploring Alternatives to Lookout for Vision.
Q: If I am having issues on or after October 10, 2024, what support will be available?
AWS will continue to provide the same level of support for Lookout for Vision that customers have today up until the end of the discontinuation notification period (October 31, 2025). For any support requirements, customers should contact AWS support.
Q: Will images in S3 be impacted?
Images that are stored in S3 for import into Lookout for Vision will not be impacted and will remain after the Lookout for Vision service is discontinued. Only the images in the Lookout for Vision service itself will be unavailable after the Lookout for Vision service is discontinued.
Q: Can I export my models from Lookout for Vision to use after the service has been discontinued?
Yes. The models packaged in Lookout for Vision for use outside the service will continue to operate after the cloud service has been shut down. You will not have the ability to train or deploy a new or updated model after the service is discontinued on October 31, 2025, but you can build new models until then and any models packaged before the service is discontinued can continue to be used after the cloud service is discontinued.
Q: Will there be any new features added to Lookout for Vision?
AWS will continue to invest in security and availability improvements for Lookout for Vision during the discontinuation notice period, but we do not plan to introduce new features between now and discontinuation of the service.

Q: What are the most common use cases for Amazon Lookout for Vision?
The most common use cases include:
• Detect damages to parts: You can detect defects related to welds, dents, cracks, bubbles, surface color, and shape of objects.
• Identify missing components: You can identify missing components or parts related to absence, presence, placement of objects within a certain tolerance.
• Uncover process issues: You can detect a defect that has a repeating pattern, which can indicate a process issue.
Q: Do I need any machine learning expertise to use Amazon Lookout for Vision?
No. With Amazon Lookout for Vision, you don’t have to build, maintain, or understand machine learning or deep learning pipelines.
To achieve accurate results on a complex computer vision task such as anomaly detection, deep learning systems need to be tuned properly and trained with labeled ground truth data. Sourcing, cleaning, and labeling data accurately is a time-consuming and expensive task. Moreover, training a deep neural network is expensive and often requires custom hardware built using Graphics Processing Units (GPU).
Amazon Lookout for Vision is fully managed and comes with anomaly detection techniques for defect detection tasks so that you don’t have to invest your time and resources on creating a deep learning pipeline. Amazon Lookout for Vision continues to improve the accuracy of its models by building on the latest research and sourcing new training data. This enables you to focus on maximizing your business value instead.
Q: How many images are needed to train a defect detection model?
The number of images required to train an anomaly detection model depends on the variability in the production line where you want the model to predict defects and the quality of the training data. For example, if the lighting, zoom level, focus on the region of interest, and alignment are constant you can get started with as few as 30 images, whereas a more complex use case with many variations (lighting, alignment, viewpoint), may need hundreds of training examples with high quality annotations. If you already have a high number of labeled images, we recommend training a model with as many images as you have available. For limits on maximum training dataset size, see the documentation.
Although hundreds of images may be required to train a defect detection model with high accuracy, initially with Lookout for Vision you can train a model with fewer images, review your test results so that you understand where it doesn’t work, add new training images, and then train the model again to iteratively improve your model.
Q: My training has failed. Will I be charged?
No. You will not be charged for the compute resources if your training fails.
Q: How many inference compute resources should I provision for my defect detection model?
The number of parallel inference compute resources needed depends on how many images you need to process at a given point in time. The throughput of a single resource depends on factors including the size of the images, the complexity of those images, and the complexity of the defect detection model. We recommend that you monitor the frequency at which you need to provision your model, and the number of images that need to be processed at a single time, in order to schedule provisioning of your model most efficiently. After you complete your production line integration, you should start provisioning your model at a scheduled time, process all your images, and then stop provisioning. If you don’t stop provisioning, you will be charged even if no images are processed.
Q: What image formats does Amazon Lookout for Vision support?
Amazon Lookout for Vision currently supports the JPEG and PNG image formats. You can submit images as a byte array.
Q: What file sizes can I use with Amazon Lookout for Vision?
Amazon Lookout for Vision supports image file sizes up to 5 MB.
Q: How can I get Amazon Lookout for Vision predictions reviewed by process engineers or operators?
You can use Amazon Lookout for Vision with Amazon Augmented AI (Amazon A2I) so you can route low confidence predictions from Amazon Lookout for Vision to human reviewers (process engineers, quality managers, or operators). You can specify the conditions under which Amazon A2I routes predictions to reviewers, which can be either a confidence score threshold, or a random sampling percentage. You can adjust these thresholds to achieve the right balance between accuracy and cost- effectiveness. This can help you implement audits to monitor the prediction accuracy regularly. Amazon A2I also provides reviewers with a web interface consisting of all the instructions and tools they need to complete their review tasks. Q: Can I use my Amazon Lookout for vision model on the edge?

You can deploy Amazon Lookout for Vision models on a hardware device of your choice using AWS IoT Greengrass. Q: Will I be charged for the model packaging API?
No. You will only be charged when your Lookout for Vision model is actively being used to detect anomalies.
