Overview

AXS a pioneer in Singapore's cashless payments industry, connects over 1 million customers each month to bill payment services through more than 650 self-service kiosks, a mobile app, and an online portal. Since its founding, the company has processed over 650 million transactions totaling more than S$210 billion—making it a cornerstone of Singapore's financial ecosystem for individuals and businesses.

AXS adopted a new operating model designed to accelerate growth and innovation. To support this strategic shift, it worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to modernize its digital infrastructure. The company implemented AWS serverless technologies that improved operational efficiency and reduced costs.

In 2024, AXS built on this modernized infrastructure. It launched the AXS Drive app, a cloud-native solution for streamlining parking payments. Using AWS to provide all necessary services on-demand, AXS rapidly deployed new features and scaled the app cost-effectively, expanding its service offerings to meet growing customer demands.

Opportunity | Transforming Infrastructure for Strategic Growth

AXS identified several limitations in its on-premises infrastructure, including slow development cycles and resource-intensive management of physical hardware. These factors constrained the company's ability to innovate and meet growing demands. With the new operating model, AXS aimed to implement a more agile and scalable solution by focusing on modernization.

The company also recognized the need to increase its capacity to develop and launch new services more rapidly, to maintain its leadership in the digital payments industry. AXS aimed to expand its digital payment services and explore new markets by creating innovative solutions such as the AXS Drive. The app, envisioned as a cloud-native solution, would help broaden the company's service offerings and meet the evolving demands of its customers.

In addition to modernizing its infrastructure, the company aimed to optimize call center operations to provide more responsive customer support. AXS sought to address existing limitations and position itself to deliver seamless, on-demand service in line with its vision for superior experiences.

In 2024, to achieve these objectives, the company collaborated with AsiaPac Technology, a systems integrator and an AWS Partner. Together, they integrated AWS solutions into AXS's operations to achieve the company's strategic objectives.

Solution | Enhancing Agility with AWS Serverless Technologies

AXS harnessed AWS serverless technologies to enhance its operations, driving rapid innovation and expanding its market presence. By developing the AXS Drive app in the cloud, the company streamlined parking payments and reduced its time-to-market within 24 weeks. This cloud-based approach simplified infrastructure management and reduced costs by 30 percent, helping AXS to focus on enhancing customer experiences and driving business growth.

The company utilized Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), the broadest and deepest compute platform, to dynamically allocate resources, optimizing performance during peak usage periods. With access to over 750 instances, AXS gained the flexibility to reliably adjust to varying workload demands.

For application deployment, the company implemented Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), a fully managed service for container orchestration. This service simplifies the deployment  and scaling of the AXS Drive app, reducing the need to manage infrastructure and reducing development time by 30 percent. The development team are also now freed to focus on building new features and driving innovation across other projects.

AXS also deployed AWS Fargate to remove the need for server management. The service runs on serverless containers that scale automatically based on application demands. As a result, the company gained greater flexibility and cost efficiency, reducing operational costs by 30 percent.

By using AWS for on-demand provisioning of server resources, AXS reduced hardware setup time from up to 2 months to near-instant availability. The company achieved 30 percent infrastructure cost savings by eliminating the need to procure physical hardware.

AXS transformed its call center operations using Amazon Connect, an artificial intelligence-powered contact center solution. Using this cloud-based service, the company could now scale its customer support quickly, providing more responsive, on-demand service without the limitations of on-premises systems. With pay-as-you-go pricing and intuitive interfaces, AXS now manages its contact center operations efficiently, further reducing reliance on physical hardware.

Outcome | Driving New Enterprise Value

AXS has transformed from a traditional bill payments service into a more agile, cloud-enabled leader in the digital payments industry. The company's transition to a serverless platform on AWS has unlocked opportunities for enterprise-scale growth. The cloud-based infrastructure provides the flexibility and agility needed to navigate diverse regulatory environments and rapidly response to market changes. With this foundation, AXS is well-positioned to explore opportunities beyond Singapore, scaling its services efficiently to enter new markets.

Looking ahead, AXS plans to evolve the AXS Drive app into a comprehensive super app for drivers. This will integrate various payment systems and customer experiences into a single platform. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to innovation and its vision of becoming a pivotal player in the region's digital transformation.

“With AWS, we've revolutionized our ability to deliver cutting-edge payment solutions faster than ever. This collaboration is pivotal to our Southeast Asia expansion. It is empowering us to launch new products like AXS Drive rapidly and cost-effectively. This brings us closer to becoming the go-to digital payments provider in the region,” said Mr Tze Wei Koh, Chief Technology Officer, AXS Singapore.
