ItaliAssistenza Increases the Effectiveness of Healthcare Using AWS

2021

ItaliAssistenza increases the adherence to healthcare treatments through patient support programs (PSP) that run on AWS. The company’s PSPs are combating the high rate of non-compliance with treatments among patients. Amazon ECS orchestrates the microservices-based platform where containers run on Amazon EC2 instances.

The AWS infrastructure has given a considerable boost to the quality of delivery, especially in relation to time-to-market, allowing the rollout of applications for a new PSP within a few minutes.”

Helping Ensure Treatments Work

ItaliAssistenza is at the forefront of the design and delivery of patient support programs (PSPs) to ensure treatment adherence in Italy. ItaliAssistenza has 15 years of experience and over 30 PSPs active in 22 therapeutic areas. In 2020, its personnel carried out 20,000 home visits and 190,000 counseling calls.

Enhancing Services Performance and Security

The company wanted a platform for its digital services that could deliver new service features while keeping patient data safe. It turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and worked with OMNYS, a member of the AWS Partner Network, to design and develop the services platform.

OMNYS built a microservices infrastructure with Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) orchestrating containers running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances to simplify management and lower cost.

To protect patient data, the platform leverages data encryption in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) in addition to Amazon WAF, Amazon GuardDuty, and Amazon Detective for security.

Increased Adherence from 60 to 95 Percent

Today, ItaliAssistenza is working with more than 10,000 registered platform users and enabling more than 120,000 PSP-related activities. Plus, it can handle an annual growth rate in registered users of more than 20 percent.

ItaliAssistenza has registered an increase in patient therapy adherence from 60 to 95 percent across the AWS-based platform. “This is an impressive result considering adherence failure not only affects patient health, but also the amount of pressure on the national healthcare system,” said Fabio Tinello, head of project development at ItaliAssistenza.

Greater Quality of Service

Using AWS, ItaliAssistenza can focus resources on platform development. Automation means OMNYS, which administers the infrastructure, has more time for building advanced features. These include real-time therapy monitoring dashboards for doctors, device development for pill-intake monitoring, and Amazon Chime-based video conferencing between doctors and patients.

Tinello concludes, “The AWS infrastructure has given a considerable boost to the quality of delivery, especially in relation to time-to-market, allowing the rollout of applications for a new PSP within a few minutes.”
