Overview
Personalized healthcare services are elevating the quality of care for patients around the world. Patient21, a company that manages more than 50 dental clinics across Germany, is on a mission to modernize healthcare. Since its founding in 2019, Patient21 has harnessed Amazon Web Services (AWS) to pursue these goals. Now, it is embracing generative artificial intelligence (AI) to transform and streamline operations for dental practices.
About Patient21
Patient21 is a healthcare company that seeks to modernize healthcare. It manages more than 50 dental practices across Germany and works to strengthen the doctor–patient relationship through innovative technology and personalized treatments.
Building generative AI solutions
A dentist’s calling is to treat patients, but administrative tasks such as documentation, filling out treatment plans, and updating clinical records take time away from patient care. Patient21 wanted to help dentists focus on patient care by building generative AI solutions to automate clinical workflows. “We want to support dentists in their core work and help them to be faster and more accurate,” says Kay Bucksch, chief technology officer at Patient21.
In February 2024, Patient21 started using Amazon SageMaker—a fully managed machine learning service that provides tools and infrastructure to build, train, and deploy models at scale. “AWS solutions are simple to adopt, use, and scale,” says Bucksch. The solution saves dentists’ time by using sophisticated natural language processing to generate standardized clinical notes from transcribed conversations.
Empowering better patient care
Patient21 has implemented its new AI solutions in multiple clinics for evaluation. Right away, dentists reported significant time savings per patient. Additionally, the AI-generated clinical notes and code mappings demonstrated a 95 percent accuracy rate, which improved operational efficiency and record keeping. With anonymized model training data, and the security features built into AWS services, Patient21 achieved all these results while maintaining compliance with data protection regulations.
Most importantly, Patient21’s efficiency enhancements will empower dentists to provide more accurate patient care faster. When dentists can focus on caregiving rather than note taking, patients benefit from improved experiences, communication, and transparency. “Patients are more comfortable when they feel like their dentist is really there for them,” says Bucksch.
Expanding solutions across Germany
Patient21’s innovative use of AWS services and generative AI demonstrates the transformative potential of technology in healthcare. After its evaluation process is complete, the company plans to implement the solutions in all its clinics to continuously improve their quality and performance.
