Overview

Rubbrband provides a specialized storyboarding and script visualization solution that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to transform written concepts into visual narratives. Early on, the company realized the need for filmmakers, digital agencies, and content strategists to quickly create compelling storyboards, visualize scripts, and prototype concepts before committing to full production.

To make this a reality, Rubbrband engaged Amazon Web Services (AWS). Using Amazon Nova Reel, which delivers high-quality, customizable visual sequences at a competitive cost, it allows users to compare multiple visualization models. The solution streamlines the preproduction process, facilitates seamless collaboration among creative teams, and achieves professional-grade storyboarding with minimal cost and effort.

About Rubbrband

Rubbrband is on a mission to empower storytellers to visualize their narratives efficiently, regardless of artistic skill level. The startup provides a cost-effective storyboarding tool that is used by small creators and enterprise customers alike.

Opportunity | Revolutionizing the Script-to-Visual Pipeline for Storytellers

The founders of Rubbrband have been exploring the potential of generative AI since they were graduate-school housemates. They recognized that traditional storyboarding and concept visualization required specialized skills, either artistic talent or hiring specialized storyboard artists, and significant time investment. This created a bottleneck in the creative process of animation and film, especially for independent filmmakers, smaller agencies, and content creators working under tight deadlines. Rubbrband was born to democratize this step in the creative pipeline.

“Early storyboarding tools were either too simplistic or overly complex, forcing creators to choose between quick sketches or time-consuming professional visualization,” says Darren Hsu, cofounder and chief operations officer of Rubbrband. “We wanted to build a complete workflow that bridges the gap between script and visual, making it possible to quickly translate written ideas into compelling visuals that tell a story.”

After a stint in the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator, the team was ready to transform the way stories move from concept to visual representation. Moreover, Rubbrband was on a mission to empower storytellers to visualize their narratives efficiently, regardless of artistic skill level.

Solution | Bridging the Gap Between Script and Visual Storytelling

Now, Rubbrband provides a comprehensive solution that helps its customers—from content creators and independent filmmakers to production studios and enterprise-level brands—use AI to quickly visualize scripts and concepts. The solution helps users transform written scripts into visual sequences, create professional storyboards in minutes rather than days, test different visual approaches to storytelling, and collaborate with team members on visual direction before production.

In keeping with its focus on storytelling, Rubbrband offers various models for script visualization, helping users to experiment with different visual styles and camera movements to find the perfect match for their narrative.

Rubbrband integrated Amazon Nova Reel in late 2024 as one of its core foundation models for storyboard sequence creation. “Amazon Nova Reel is ideal for storyboarding because of its superior camera controls for movement and pacing,” says Hsu. “It gives storytellers the ability to experiment with different camera angles and movements to find the most effective way to tell their story visually.”

Cost-efficiency is important for Rubbrband’s subscription model, which offers Free, Standard, and Pro tiers based on generation time. “Affordable visualization is essential for the iterative nature of storyboarding,” says Hsu. “Using Amazon Nova Reel, it is economically viable for creators to experiment with multiple visual approaches to the same script.” Creating a 6-second storyboard sequence costs approximately 50 cents, compared with 4 dollars for similar generations—a cost reduction of 80 percent. This helps Rubbrband keep its storyboarding services accessible to creators at all levels.

Hsu sees the sweet spot for Amazon Nova Reel in product-focused narratives and brand storytelling, where maintaining a consistent visual identity is paramount. “Amazon Nova Reel excels at consistency when visualizing branded elements,” says Hsu. “It retains product logos and key visual identity elements throughout a sequence—essential for brands that need to maintain strict visual guidelines even at the storyboarding stage.”

Outcome | Empowering Storytellers from Concept to Preproduction

Using the generative AI power of Amazon Nova Reel, Rubbrband’s customers can efficiently bridge the gap between written concepts and visualization. Filmmakers can test different visual approaches to scenes before shooting. Agencies can present clients with visual concepts earlier in the creative process. Content creators can refine their storytelling approaches through visual experimentation without using production resources. Many creatives are seeing the benefits of Rubbrband’s solution—in 3 months, Rubbrband’s user base grew by 300 percent.

“What separates us from general AI image generators is our focus on visual storytelling,” says Hsu. “We’re offering a specialized tool kit for everyone involved in the preproduction process—script visualization, storyboarding, concept testing, and collaborative refinement of visual narratives.”

As Rubbrband continues to expand its capabilities, users will have even more tools to refine their visual storytelling, from more specialized camera movements to genre-specific visual styles. And throughout this growth, Rubbrband will continue using AWS. “The support we’ve received from AWS has been invaluable,” says Hsu. “As we continue to focus on the unique needs of storytellers, we’ll be using Amazon Nova Reel and other AWS solutions to make the script-to-visual journey even more seamless.”
