Starbucks Uses Data on AWS to Improve Customer Service

Starbucks, a Seattle-based global coffee company with more then 33,000 stores worldwide, is driven by its mission statement to “inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.”

According to Rajesh Naidu—former vice president enterprise data and analytics technology, enterprise architecture, and emerging technology at Starbucks—data is the cornerstone of being able to connect with its customers, understand their preferences, and make those moments meaningful. The Starbucks analytics and data ecosystem is heavily reliant on its systems of record for digital ordering and loyalty that run on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“By leveraging Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), we were able to get the managed Kubernetes services offering and have AWS reliably run these workloads in multiple Availability Zones, and provide us the reliability and security that we needed,” says Naidu. “Another wonderful feature that we are able to utilize with AWS is combining Amazon EC2 Spot Instances with on-demand instances using Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling to optimize workload and cost performance.”

Looking to the future, Starbucks is investing in machine learning and artificial intelligence, data literacy across all levels of the company, and other initiatives to spur growth and deliver innovation for its customers and partners.
