Amazon Lex Achieves HIPAA Eligibility

Posted on: Dec 11, 2019

Amazon Lex is now a U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) eligible service. Customers can now use Amazon Lex to process user input that contains protected health information (PHI).

HIPAA Eligibility applies to all AWS Regions where Amazon Lex is available. If you have a HIPAA Business Associate Addendum (BAA) in place with AWS, you can now start using Amazon Lex for your HIPAA eligible workloads. If you do not have a BAA in place with AWS or have any other questions about running HIPAA-regulated workloads on AWS, please contact us. See the Architecting for HIPAA Security and Compliance on Amazon Web Services Whitepaper for information and best practices about how to configure AWS HIPAA Eligible Services to store, process, and transmit PHI. For more information regarding HIPAA and Amazon Lex communication considerations, see the Amazon Lex Administration Guide.

Amazon Lex is a service for building conversational interfaces using voice and text. Powered by the same conversational engine as Alexa, Amazon Lex provides high quality speech recognition and language understanding capabilities, enabling addition of sophisticated, natural language ‘chatbots’ to new and existing applications.
