Introducing AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP, powered by Kiro
Enterprise developers writing SAP ABAP code must implement and transform business logic in a complex, integrated system. To address this challenge, ABAP developers need AI coding tools centered on solving business requirements, in a collaboration between the agent and the developer. Spec-driven development (SDD) is a disciplined methodology that puts business requirements first.
In 2025, Kiro brought SDD to the developer community for a structured approach to agentic development. Today, we are excited to release AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP, powered by Kiro, to help customers use SDD in Eclipse, alongside SAP’s ABAP Development Tools (ADT). ABAP developers now have a spec-first workflow in the ABAP editor you already use.
“We were impressed with the AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP and its ability to incorporate business requirements in the spec-driven development process. In just five hours, it was able to review our TMS code customizations, verify its compatibility with an upcoming change, and produce a report which we can leverage and do a further deep dive on.” Rajesh Shah, Continuous Integration Lead, Mondelēz International.
A collaborative approach
The AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP transforms the ABAP development workflow by engaging you during the design phase. The agent can then work autonomously during implementation. It then re-engages you when it is ready for handoff, or when requirements change.
The Coding Plugin engages with the developer through agentic chat inside Eclipse. Describe what you need, and the plugin interviews you to build steering documents and collaborate on defining business requirements. Then it designs a solution based on the relevant ABAP objects it finds in your live SAP backend. It proposes an implementation plan built on that design. This “spec” is a collaborative product between the developer and the agent. With the spec, the agent can tackle large developments, transformations, and improvements, by testing itself and iterating toward a high-quality result. In the chat, the Coding Plugin can write adt:// hyperlinks so you can quickly jump to ABAP code and objects it references. It can even open objects in the editor for you to review changes or discuss code together.
The Coding Plugin surfaces Kiro’s thought process and Kiro’s tool approval prompts. Kiro can also connect to your organization’s MCP servers for ticketing systems, internal documentation, and messaging, so it can be part of your ABAP team’s end-to-end development workflow.
Example prompts
Here are a few prompts that showcase the Coding Plugin in action:
- “Write a spec to add a new field to table ZLOGISTICS and update the related validation logic. Take into account the changes we’ve made recently to report ZFREIGHT_PATH. Verify its resulting output matches the sample data in the attached spreadsheet.”
- “Create a spec that reviews the objects in package ZFINANCE and documents them with an abapdoc annotation, with inline comments as appropriate, and verify you match the house style found in package ZSHIPPING.”
- “Make a spec that adds unit tests to the classes in package ZSALES, then iteratively refactors them for clean core compliance using the ATC, and verify that the unit tests still pass at the end.”
Who should use the AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP?
The AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP is well suited for teams of ABAP developers looking for a collaboration with agentic tools. It recognizes the programmer’s domain knowledge and business expertise, while capitalizing on Kiro’s coding ability. Devraj Bardhan, SAP AI Leader, IBM Consulting, shared “By integrating the AWS Coding Plugin for SAP ABAP into our development workflows, we’ve reduced custom ABAP extension development time by up to 30% and cut post-development defects by up to 45%. This has allowed us to deliver enterprise-grade SAP solutions to our customers faster, with security and compliance built in from the very first line of code. Kudos to AWS for bringing a true coding agent for ABAP into the environment our SAP developers rely on every day.”
The Coding Plugin is distinguished by:
- Living in your ABAP editor. The Coding Plugin collaborates with the human expert by opening the relevant objects directly in your Eclipse workbench and following what you’re looking at, so it works like a developer sitting next to you.
- Spec-driven development. The Coding Plugin is built around writing a specification before generating code. This means defining testable success criteria up front and maintaining a task list that keeps larger changes on track.
- Low-friction setup. Installation follows the same process as installing SAP ADT in Eclipse. The Coding Plugin launches Kiro CLI in the background and configures its MCP connections for you. It uses the same connection to ABAP you already defined in Eclipse, and does not introduce a separate authentication or connectivity path.
- Built to handle ABAP-sized context. Its tools are tuned to stay efficient even against long ABAP Test Cockpit (ATC) results and large code objects, while maintaining a frugal use of context.
Built for where you are today
If you run SAP ECC and are working toward S/4HANA and RISE, you need agentic development most of all. The Coding Plugin supports a broad range of ABAP-based systems, from ECC through S/4HANA and BTP ABAP, so you can accelerate your path to clean core and RISE.
