Part 2: Multi-Cluster GitOps — Cluster fleet provisioning and bootstrapping

Introduction This is Part 2 in a series that demonstrates how to build an extensible and flexible GitOps system, based on a hub-and-spoke model to manage the lifecycles of Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) clusters, workloads deployed to these clusters as well as their dependencies on other AWS-managed resources. It’s recommended that you read Part […]

Application Networking with Amazon VPC Lattice and Amazon EKS

Introduction AWS customers building cloud-native applications or modernizing applications using microservices architecture can adopt Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) to accelerate innovation and time to market while lowering their total cost of ownership. Many customers operate multiple Amazon EKS clusters to provide better tenant isolation and to meet organizational requirements. Often, there’s a need […]

Autoscaling Amazon ECS services based on custom metrics with Application Auto Scaling

Introduction Application Auto Scaling is a web service for developers and system administrators who need a solution for automatically scaling their scalable resources for AWS services such as Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) services, Amazon DynamoDB tables, AWS Lambda Provisioned Concurrency, and more. Application Auto Scaling now offers support for scaling such resources using […]

Automate rollbacks for Amazon ECS rolling deployments with CloudWatch alarms

Introduction Amazon ECS now offers native support for monitoring and automatically reacting to changes during a rolling update by using Amazon CloudWatch metric alarms. This enables customers to easily automate discovery and remediation for failed deployments and minimize the performance and availability impacts. Customers can configure Amazon CloudWatch alarms for their rolling updates using the […]

Addressing IPv4 address exhaustion in Amazon EKS clusters using private NAT gateways

Addressing IPv4 address exhaustion in Amazon EKS clusters using private NAT gateways

Introduction The Amazon VPC Container Network Interface (CNI) plugin creates many advantages for pod networking when deployed on an Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) cluster. First, it lets us reuse proven, battle-tested Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) networking and security best practices for building Kubernetes clusters on AWS. This allows us to use […]

Metrics and traces collection from Amazon ECS using AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry with dynamic service discovery

Note: The solution described in this blog post is no longer recommended. See the ecsobserver extension for OpenTelemetry as alternative approach. An earlier blog published last year (Part 1 in the series), Metrics collection from Amazon ECS using Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, demonstrated how to deploy Prometheus server on an Amazon ECS cluster, dynamically […]

GitOps model for provisioning and bootstrapping Amazon EKS clusters using Crossplane and Flux

In an earlier blog (Part 1 of the series), I discussed the adoption of the GitOps model as an efficient strategy for provisioning cloud provider-specific managed resources, such as, for example, Amazon S3 bucket and Amazon RDS instance, that application workloads depend on. The blog presented the details of implementing a use case where an Amazon […]

In addition to managing the so-called "Day Two" operations, the GitOps model can be used to automate cluster lifecycle management as well. In this blog post, we take a look at implementing a real-world use case by leveraging the strength of two open-source tools, namely, Crossplane and Argo CD. A production-ready Amazon EKS cluster is employed as the central management cluster and used to manage the tasks of both provisioning other Amazon EKS clusters and deploying workloads on to them.

GitOps model for provisioning and bootstrapping Amazon EKS clusters using Crossplane and Argo CD

Customers are increasingly using multiple Kubernetes clusters to manage their application delivery to different environments.  Managed services like Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) help customers offload the onerous task of managing the Kubernetes control plane. But cluster operators face the challenge of managing the lifecycles of these clusters and deploying applications consistently to multiple […]

A multi-cluster shared services architecture with Amazon EKS using Cilium ClusterMesh

Introduction Over the past couple of years, organizations have increased their pace of Kubernetes adoption. They want to be more agile so they can innovate and deliver new products to the market more efficiently. Among many of the early adopters of the Kubernetes platform, it was not uncommon to operate a single large Kubernetes cluster […]

Autoscaling Amazon ECS services based on custom CloudWatch and Prometheus metrics

Introduction Horizontal scalability is a critical aspect of cloud native applications. Microservices deployed to Amazon ECS leverage the Application Auto Scaling service to automatically scale based on observed metrics data. Amazon ECS measures service utilization based on CPU and memory resources consumed by the tasks that belong to a service and publishes CloudWatch metrics, namely, […]
