A Builder's Journey | Cecile Bonnet

Follow AWS Builder Cecile Bonnet's journey across continents as she evangelizes AWS GetIT, a fully-funded education program that provides students with the opportunity to explore cloud technology and design application ideas to solve real-world problems in their communities.

For 12- to 14-year-old students dreaming about what the future holds, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) GetIT program provides an opportunity to explore cloud technology and innovate to solve real-world problems. It also sparks new passions for AWS women and non-binary tech professionals who, as AWS GetIT ambassadors, serve as role models for a future generation of inclusive and diverse tech leaders.

AWS GetIT is a fully-funded education program and competition that works with students in schools—across 13 countries and 14 languages in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Australia—to inspire the next generation, especially girls, to consider a future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Cecile Bonnet, the global leader for AWS GetIT, said the vision for the program began in 2018 with a three-pronged purpose: inspire young students to get involved in IT, promote diversity with fun and engaging cloud skills training, and empower women working at AWS to gain the confidence and skills they need to become more visible as tech industry role models.

Bonnet has found the experience personally fulfilling, especially as she imagines what the future looks like for her daughter and son.

“Witnessing the creativity and sense of purpose in the next generation—they want to make an impact on the world, their community, be given the opportunity to solve problems. I also get to work with a team of passionate and dedicated individuals who care about nurturing a strong and diverse community of builders for the digital world.”

“Part of what makes AWS GetIT so special is our ambassadors, who are a diverse group of women in tech who have a deep commitment to helping young women amplify their voices in a field where they have too often not been heard. These ambassadors are matched to schools to go into classrooms as role models to support young learners on their tech journey, and inspire them to imagine what is possible for their careers. Our ambassadors show them that they are many paths to a future in technology.”

Building the confidence to achieve anything

As of August 2022, AWS GetIT has trained over 19,000 students across eight countries. As these students have learned how to use cloud technology and innovate, they’ve also been exposed to different types of technology careers.

The women and non-binary AWS GetIT ambassadors leading AWS GetIT are paired with schools to provide guidance and classroom support throughout the program, where they also get to hone their presentation and public speaking skills. These ambassadors have become advocates for inclusion, diversity, and equity across AWS and the tech industry, and role models to AWS GetIT’s young students as they prove that a career in technology is possible for anyone, no matter their gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, or background.

“Part of what makes AWS GetIT so special is our ambassadors, who are a diverse group of women in tech who have a deep commitment to helping young women amplify their voices in a field where they have too often not been heard,” Bonnet said. “These ambassadors are matched to schools to go into classrooms as role models to support young learners on their tech journey, and inspire them to imagine what is possible for their careers. Our ambassadors show them that they are many paths to a future in technology.”

The competition aspect comes after the program curriculum, where schools can submit up to two student application ideas for consideration in a country-wide competition. Teams with ideas then present to a judging panel of experts in the tech industry.

Since the program’s inception, students have designed hundreds of application ideas covering topics like school life, mental health, student support, community, and the environment.

“The AWS GetIT competition entries never fail to amaze us,” Bonnet said. “Every year, the students demonstrate their creativity and innovative thinking by designing apps for topics that are meaningful to them, their school, and their community. We hope this experience will inspire them to continue their learnings and give them the confidence that they can achieve anything.”

Accessible learning at any stage in the educational journey

AWS GetIT’s program leaders understand that learning occurs over the course of a lifetime, which is why AWS GetIT engages learners with free support wherever they are on their educational journeys. This includes AWS GetIT in addition to other programs such as AWS Academy, which provides universities with ready-to-deliver cloud curriculums, and AWS Educate, which offers free, self-paced online cloud training resources and labs.

These programs are designed to be accessible, engaging, and provide skills and training for students to succeed in the modern workforce.

As for people who are already working, AWS provides programs that extend beyond a classroom learning environment. AWS Skill Builder is our digital learning center with more than 600 free, self-paced digital cloud skills training courses and learning plans to help anyone—whether in a technical role or not—build cloud skills and expertise. As a person builds cloud skills, AWS Certifications offer the next step to solidify and demonstrate expertise with an industry-recognized credential.

Here’s how serving as an AWS GetIT ambassador has helped AWS women find new meaning in their work.

"The AWS GetIT program is everything I could have wished for when I was a little girl. It means a lot to me to be the representation for Black girls in STEM that I wished I had. It’s very rewarding to have the opportunity to spark little fires of excitement for technology in girls. I wanted to take part in the program as it allows me to give back to the younger generation and represent Black women in tech."

Rosemon Meissner
AWS global account manager

"I think as women and as Amazonians we have a big responsibility toward the community. It would be a big honor for me if I can be even a small piece of the puzzle for a young woman to consider pursuing a tech career. Representation matters and I didn’t have any when I started. With the AWS GetIT program, we are smashing the old schemes, and this is absolutely awesome!"

Olimpia Brugnoli
Amazon senior project manager, start up

“The AWS GetIT program means a lot to me. Growing up and pursuing a career in engineering, there wasn’t much representation for me and I typically felt excluded. I am really passionate about improving the participation of young Black girls in STEM, and seeing them get excited and curious about tech is so rewarding. As an added bonus, I get the opportunity to develop my presentation and speaking skills!”

Deborah Healer
Amazon special projects manager

"I was motivated to take part in AWS GetIT to have a direct impact in my community here in Spain, and to positively influence young women to take interest in STEM initiatives. I was very happy that there was a way, through Amazon, to get back to working with schools."

Indira Pallaro
Amazon Learning Experience program manager

"I recognize myself in the goals of the AWS GetIT program: I have been working for 17 years in IT and I hold a technical role. At university, I was one of the few women enrolled in the computer science course, and in my career I encountered some stereotypes. Participating in AWS GetIT means I get to contribute to breaking down cultural barriers."

Carmela Gambardella
AWS senior solutions architect

"The AWS GetIT program has really taken me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to accept uncertainty—nothing is more uncertain than a Q&A session with 200 young people! As ambassadors, we get the opportunity to grow and learn alongside the young students. We also get to develop our own presentation and listening skills as we aim to inspire youth and showcase the many opportunities available in the tech industry.”
