AWS named a Leader in new 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems

Industry analyst firm Gartner has published a new report, the Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems, naming AWS as a Leader and placing AWS highest among the 16 vendors evaluated for “Ability to Execute.” We’re proud to be recognized by Gartner as a Leader for several consecutive years in both the database and analytics market segments, but there’s more to the story of what makes this report special. We’re sharing it here because we believe it’s critical to enterprises making cloud-based data management decisions that could impact the future of their business.

This report is Gartner’s first database and analytics report exclusively evaluating cloud-based services, doubling down on their assertion in a June 2019 report that The Future of the DBMS Market is Cloud. We couldn’t agree more – eleven years after AWS introduced its first cloud database service, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) supporting MySQL in 2009, our customers have embraced the cloud wholeheartedly. In fact, we recently shared in an October 15, 2020, blog post that 300,000 customers have used AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) to bring their databases to AWS. Similarly, 8 years after AWS introduced Amazon Redshift as the first fully managed data warehouse in production in the cloud, the service has grown to be the most popular cloud data warehouse on the market, with tens of thousands of customers deploying workloads on it today.

Our customers have told us that they don’t want the “one-size-fits-all” approach that old guard providers deliver, so we offer 15 database services, including relational, key-value, document, in-memory, graph, time series, wide-column, and ledger databases. All those databases have been rapidly adopted by our customers. But don’t take our word for it – Gartner’s most recent market share report for Database Platform as a Service (Market Share: Enterprise Public Cloud Services, Worldwide, 2019) shows that AWS market share of 55% is over 10% more than the combined market share of the other 15 participants in the Magic Quadrant for Cloud Databases.

For analytics, customers share that they want more value from their data even as it is growing exponentially, coming from new and increasingly diverse data sources, used by many people, and analyzed by many applications. Our portfolio of analytics services spans data lakes, data warehouse modernization, big data processing, real-time streaming analytics, operational analytics, and self-service business intelligence. It gives customers the easiest way to build data lakes and run analytics workloads on the most secure infrastructure, with a comprehensive set of analytics services that are open, scalable, and cost-effective. When it comes to analytics, breadth and depth matters – Gartner recently recognized AWS analytics leadership in another detailed evaluation, the 2020 Scorecard for AWS Cloud Analytical Data Stores (August 2020), where AWS scored the highest of any vendor evaluated against the criteria (92%) and a perfect 100% for required criteria.
