AWS Interconnect - multicloud Pricing

AWS Interconnect – multicloud

With AWS Interconnect – multicloud, you are charged hourly for each interconnect based on your selected bandwidth and automatically assigned pricing tier. There are no per-gigabyte data transfer charges. Billing starts when you create an interconnect and stops when you delete it. Interconnect hour charges are billed in one-hour increments, rounded up to the nearest hour.

When you create an interconnect, you select its local AWS Region, the AWS Region to which the interconnect is physically proximate. Your pricing tier is computed based on where your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud’s (Amazon VPC’s) traffic originates (the source AWS Region(s)) and the interconnect's local AWS region. Greater geographic path distances generally result in higher tiers.

There are five pricing tiers, with Tier 5 being the most expensive and Tier 1 being the least expensive. Each interconnect is assigned a single tier based on the highest-tier path it uses. You are only charged for your assigned tier, not for each tier individually. Higher tiers include all connectivity paths from lower tiers.

You can also use one free, local 500Mbps interconnect per Region starting in May.

For more information, see the user guide on how AWS Interconnect pricing works.

AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Networking Services

When you attach a Direct Connect Gateway (DXGW) to your interconnect, you can use Virtual Private Gateways, Transit Gateways, and Cloud WAN.

AWS Cloud WAN users should carefully review their network topology before attaching interconnects.

As a global networking service spanning multiple AWS Regions with Core Network Edges (CNEs), Cloud WAN enables any CNE in your Core Network to send traffic through your interconnect when the interconnect's DXGW is associated with your Cloud WAN Core Network. Your tier is determined by the highest tier CNE in your topology, not the CNE in the interconnect's local AWS Region. An interconnect with a local AWS Region of us-east-1 (N. Virginia) attached to a DXGW associated with CNEs in us-east-1 and ap-southeast-1 (Singapore) will be assigned Tier 4, not Tier 1.

AWS Interconnect – multicloud Pricing

To determine your AWS Interconnect – multicloud pricing, identify your source AWS Region(s) where your VPC traffic originates and your interconnect's local AWS Region. Find the highest tier pairing of source AWS Region to local AWS Region in the pricing tiers table below to identify your tier. Once you have your tier, look up the price by your interconnect’s local AWS Region, tier, and bandwidth.

This pricing applies to AWS Interconnect – multicloud. You are responsible for your relationship with other cloud service providers, including your agreements with them, complying with their policies and procedures and paying them any applicable fees.

Pricing Example – Single Region Workload

You created an AWS Interconnect – multicloud connection from AWS US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 to Google Cloud N. Virginia (us-east4) with 10 Gbps bandwidth. You attached your VPC in US East (N. Virginia) to a Direct Connect Gateway via a Virtual Private Gateway and configured routing to send traffic to your GCP VPC.

Since both your source AWS Region (US East N. Virginia us-east-1) and destination GCP region (N. Virginia us-east4) are local, you are assigned Tier 1 pricing. For a 10 Gbps interconnect at Tier 1, the rate is $12.33 per hour. Over a full month (730 hours), this results in a charge of $9,000.90 ($12.33 × 730 hours).

Pricing Example – Multi Region Workload

You created an AWS Interconnect – multicloud connection from AWS US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 to Google Cloud N. Virginia (us-east4) with 10 Gbps bandwidth. You attached the interconnect to a Direct Connect Gateway and associated it with your Cloud WAN Core Network, which has Core Network Edges (CNEs) in both us-east-1 (N. Virginia) and ap-southeast-1 (Singapore). Your workloads in Singapore can now send traffic through the us-east-1 interconnect.

Because your Cloud WAN topology includes a CNE in ap-southeast-1 (Singapore), your interconnect is automatically assigned Tier 4 long-haul pricing. For a 10 Gbps interconnect at Tier 4, the rate is $51.78 per hour. Over a full month (730 hours), this results in a charge of nearly $37,799.40 ($51.78 × 730 hours).
