Email is one of the most cost-effective and reliable ways to reach your global customer base for both promotional and transactional use cases. However, building a large-scale email solution can be a complex and costly challenge for a business: you have to first build your infrastructure and set up your network, and then warm up your IP addresses and continually protect your sender reputation. Many third-party email solutions come with contracts, minimum charges, and up-front costs.
Amazon Pinpoint reduces these challenges so that you can focus on crafting the right content and delighting your customers with timely communications. With Amazon Pinpoint, you can start sending emails in minutes, and you only pay for what you use.
You can schedule and send emails to pre-defined segments, create event-based email campaigns, and deliver transactional emails for common use cases such as order confirmations and appointment reminders both from within the marketer-friendly console and the Amazon Pinpoint REST API. After an email has been sent, you can analyze the performance of the campaign or transactional emails and the impact your emails had on user behavior.
The likelihood that an email you send arrives in your recipients’ inbox depends on the reputation of the IP address that sends the email. Amazon Pinpoint maintains a strong reputation among mailbox providers by actively filtering unsolicited and malicious content, and provides you with features to protect and improve your own sender reputation such as the deliverability dashboard and dedicated IP addresses.

Dedicated IP Addresses
By default, Amazon Pinpoint sends email from IP addresses that are shared with other Amazon Pinpoint customers. Shared addresses are a great option for many users: they are included in the base Amazon Pinpoint pricing, and their reputations are carefully monitored to ensure high deliverability.
Amazon Pinpoint customers who send large volumes of emails also have the option to lease dedicated IP addresses reserved for your exclusive use. Dedicated IP addresses give you complete control over the reputations of the IP addresses that you use to send email through Amazon Pinpoint.
If you lease multiple dedicated IP addresses, you can create pools of your dedicated IP addresses. Dedicated IP pools are groups of IP addresses you use for different purposes. For example, you can create a pool of addresses to use when sending transactional messages, and another pool for sending marketing communications.
Amazon Pinpoint offers analytics for both transactional emails and email campaigns to help you gain deep insights into the performance of the emails you’ve sent and how your emails impact customer behavior. Amazon Pinpoint can capture information about the entire email response funnel, including the numbers of sends, deliveries, opens, clicks, bounces, complaints, and rejections. You can also stream this data using Amazon Kinesis Streams to an Amazon S3 Bucket or an Amazon Redshift database for storage or further analysis.
Reputation Management with the Deliverability Dashboard
Amazon Pinpoint's Deliverability Dashboard helps you understand and remediate issues that could impact the deliverability of your emails, such as poor IP reputation, suboptimal email content, and attempting to email users who have unsubscribed or bounced in the past. You rely on the email channel to deliver important information to your users, such as password resets and order confirmations, so protecting and improving your inbox placement rate and email sender reputation is incredibly important. With the Deliverability Dashboard, you can increase the effectiveness of your email campaigns and create a better email experience for your users. This feature is available for an additional monthly charge. Learn more about the deliverability dashboard in the Amazon Pinpoint User Guide.
Generic, one-size-fits-all emails tend to have lower engagement rates than personalized messages. When you create an email template for a transactional or campaign-based engagement, you can include personalization tags, such as the recipient’s name or location. When Amazon Pinpoint sends the email, it replaces the personalization tags with the appropriate values for the recipient so that your customers receive highly-personalized messages that they are more likely to engage with.
Email receivers use content filters to detect certain attributes in your messages to identify whether your message is legitimate. These content filters automatically review the content of your messages to identify common traits of unwanted or malicious messages. Amazon Pinpoint uses content filtering technologies to help detect and block messages that contain malware before they are sent. Learn more about content filtering in our email best practices guide.
When an email provider receives an email, they check to see if it is authenticated before attempting to deliver it to the recipient. Authentication demonstrates to the email provider that you own the email address you are sending from. Amazon Pinpoint supports all industry-standard authentication mechanisms, including DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), Sender Policy Framework (SPF), and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC).
Multiple Email Sending Interfaces
Amazon Pinpoint offers several methods of sending email, including the Amazon Pinpoint console, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) interface, and the Amazon Pinpoint API. You can access the API using the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI), or by using an AWS Software Development Kit (SDK).
You can use event destinations to send information about email events to various destinations, including Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon SNS, and Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose. Email events include email opens, clicks, bounces, complaints, and rejections.
Raw Email Support
You can use the Amazon Pinpoint API or SMTP interface to send raw, MIME-formatted emails. MIME emails can include custom headers and file attachments.
Test Email Campaign Performance
Create up to five email campaign message variations and deploy them to a subset of your customers. Measure the performance of each treatment, and then send only the best message to your target segment.
