AstraZeneca on AWS

AstraZeneca is a global biopharmaceutical company developing medicines in a range of therapy areas. Using AWS, AstraZeneca can accelerate life-saving research and product development.

Overview

AstraZeneca innovates on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to speed the time to science and time to market with new medicines. It built a genomics pipeline on AWS using high-performance computing that processes over 1,600 exomes per hour. Using machine learning (ML) on AWS, it automates tissue-sample analysis and reduces time spent cataloging samples by 50 percent. With a large-scale processing workflow, AstraZeneca runs over 51 billion statistical tests in under 24 hours—a feat made possible by the cloud.

AstraZeneca's Cloud Journey

How AstraZeneca uses data and AI/ML to protect patient lives

AstraZeneca is using data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning (ML) with an ambition to eliminate cancer as a cause of death and protect the lives of patients suffering with heart failure and lung disease. It moved 25 petabytes of data across the AWS global network, generating 75 petabytes of intermediary data in the process, resulting in the ability to run 110 billion statistical tests in under 30 hours and gain insights that influence patient health.

AstraZeneca uses AWS to do the heavy lifting while it focuses on delivering business value

Using AWS, AstraZeneca has been very successful with its small molecule portfolio, and is transitioning to biologics and beyond and has transformed its R&D to deliver medicines to patients much more quickly.

Machine learning is transforming drug discovery at AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is leveraging machine learning to transform their drug discovery process, particularly in pathology research where they use Amazon SageMaker Ground Truth to analyze tissue samples, reducing cataloging time by 50%. The machine learning models have achieved a 95% success rate in identifying key kidney structures affected by diabetic injury, allowing researchers like Magnus Söderberg to spend less time manually reviewing samples and more time on drug research.
