KONE Uses AWS to Power Safer, More Efficient Urban Transport

As a global elevator and escalator leader, KONE safely moves over two billion people daily—redefining urban journeys with smart, secure technologies

In a Nutshell

Every day, millions of commuters rely on metro stations to get to work, school, or home, but overcrowding and faulty equipment can make those journeys risky. KONE’s AWS-powered digital twin solution changes that. Built using AWS Internet of Things (IoT) - technology, the system helps station managers prevent crowding before it happens, keeping people safe, moving, and informed. This innovation not only smooths daily commutes but also sets a new global standard for smart and secure transport hubs.

Business Opportunity

Rush-hour crowding in metro stations can cause various challenges which could be dangerous at times as bottlenecks can build, with risks of accidents or stampedes. KONE saw a pressing need of station operators and managers to reduce the risk of accidents, improve passenger safety, and secure the flow of millions of daily journeys.

The Solution

With AWS, KONE is reshaping the daily transit experience for commuters around the world. The KONE Station Twin is a secure platform that gives operators real-time visibility into all station assets. Built on AWS IoT Core and integrated with services such as Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (Amazon MSK), Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS), and Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS).

The solution, backed by AWS built-in by design cybersecurity, combines predictive insight from accurate, real-time 3D scans of environments with historical data from people flow sensors. It allows the operators to optimize their stations according to demand and prevent breakdowns and overcrowding.

With our AWS-based digital station twin platform, passengers are better protected for overcrowding and safety issues as they are easier to detect and address. Transportation across our cities can also become more sustainable due to metro stations operating more efficiently, attracting more passengers to travel smoothly and with comfort.

Meet Jari Karhu, Senior Lead Data Scientist

Jari is the technical lead for the people flow digital twin development and is focused on using digital twins to tackle station overcrowding.

What excites Jari about their role
I love to work with the latest senor and digital technologies. There are no ready-made solutions, we are creating solutions from scratch, which is challenging but rewarding.

Jari’s source of inspiration
I am inspired by our great team spirit. I hope by being myself, bold and courageous I can also serve as an example to my team too.

How AWS is helping to shape their business

While transportation hubs are benefiting from our solution the most at this stage, we want to make it scalable for more use cases in the future and AWS technologies will play  a key role in supporting us in this.
