MiHIN migrated from physical data centers to the cloud to improve cyber security controls

 Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN)

 Michigan, USA

 Champion since 2023

Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) is Michigan’s non-profit designated entity for the legal, technical, and private exchange of statewide health information. Breaking down disparate and siloed data systems, the digital infrastructure provides critical and comprehensive patient information to the state’s network of care providers consisting of doctors, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, payers, and others in the health care ecosystem. Being 100% cloud based, and with over 8.3 billion cumulative messages received to date, MiHIN’s network consists of over 880 unique legal entities, representing 148 hospitals, 665 outpatient facilities, 298 skilled nursing facilities, 44 physician organizations, and over 5,600 care entities. The network routes information for more than 13 million patients, and participating hospitals send notification for approximately 99% of all admissions in the state.

In 2015, MiHIN made the strategic decision to migrate from physical data centers to the cloud to improve cyber security controls and increase flexibility. In 2019, they took cloud computing to the next level by transitioning from a monolithic stack to a cloud-native approach on Amazon Web Services (AWS). They have widely adopted serverless technology and developed an event driven, microservices architecture that enables them to scale cost-effectively. Furthermore, they promote this advantage to the market and have been instrumental in the conversion of other state and regional HIE’s from their monolithic systems. In addition to the serverless technology widely in use at MiHIN, they are undertaking their next major transition to AWS Neptune to resolve the fragmentation challenge in US healthcare and social programs to create a truly patient-centric offering that reduces information overload and permits patient specific context and interoperability at scale.

What is the AWS State and Local Government Champions Program?

The AWS State and Local Government Champions program recognizes, celebrates, and supports organizations driving digital transformation with cloud computing. The purpose of the program is to acknowledge customers that have used AWS products and services in innovative ways to improve the service to their communities. The organizations selected to receive this award share the mission to transform and advance state and local government to better serve their constituents. This community will provide relatable stories for other state and local government customers to reference as they think about their own digital transformation journey.
