AWS Optimization and Licensing Assessment

Evaluate your Windows environment to reduce costs and optimize compute

When you are evaluating options for migrating to the cloud or reducing licensing costs, you can take advantage of an AWS Optimization and Licensing Assessment (AWS OLA) to save on third party licensing costs and run your resources more efficiently.

AWS OLA is a free program for new and existing customers to assess and optimize current on-premises and cloud environments, based on actual resource utilization, third-party licensing, and application dependencies. Click here to sign up so the AWS OLA team can help you.

Use AWS OLA to help you build your migration and licensing strategy on AWS. AWS OLA will provide you with a report that will model your deployment options, using existing licensing entitlements. These results can help you explore available cost savings across our flexible licensing options. AWS OLA can also be used in combination with MAP for Windows, providing you with tools, support, and resources during your cloud migration.

Optimize Your Windows Workloads for AWS

Rightsize your resources

Discover workloads in your on-premises or cloud environment and build an inventory of your compute resources. Our tooling-based approach will help you determine your actual utilization requirements to help optimally select the lowest-cost AWS EC2 instance size and type for each workload. Use this data to determine the right blend of on-demand and spot instances, dedicated hosts, savings plan, and other options tailored to your environment.

Reduce costs

Without optimizing your cloud infrastructure, the cost of overprovisioning third-party licensing can exceed the cost of compute. Leverage the recommendations from an AWS OLA to get the most value from your existing licensing entitlements by configuring your instances to require fewer licenses while still maintaining highly performant applications. Adapt your on-premises licensing strategy to enable your cloud migration.

Explore flexible licensing options

Use the results of an AWS OLA to avoid unnecessary licensing costs and vendor lock-in. Model different licensing scenarios with license-included or Bring Your Own License (BYOL) instances, to meet the needs of your business. Flexible licensing options enable you to drive seasonal workloads and support agile experimentation, as well as to model dedicated environments, so you only pay for what you need.

How it works

Microsoft SQL Server on Amazon EC2

The AWS OLA analysis will model your Microsoft SQL Server workloads on AWS, using CPU core optimization, database consolidation, and SQL Server edition optimization to reduce licensing costs without reducing performance. To meet the specific needs of your workloads, AWS supports many versions of SQL Server Express, Web, Standard, and Enterprise. Your choice of several versions of Microsoft SQL Server and cloud-native databases in both managed and unmanaged environments offer you the flexibility to run a database server for as much or as little time as you need.

Windows Server on Amazon EC2

Use AWS OLA to evaluate your options for buying license-included instances or bringing your own Windows Server licenses. Our experience running Windows applications has earned our customers’ trust and the number of AWS enterprise customers using Amazon EC2 for Windows Server has grown by 400% between 2015 and 2018.

Dedicated Hosts

Even without Software Assurance, AWS OLA identifies opportunities to bring existing licenses to AWS. Amazon EC2 Dedicated Hosts allow you to use your eligible software licenses in AWS, so you get the flexibility and effectiveness of using your own licenses, but with the resiliency, simplicity, and elasticity of AWS.

Hear what our customers are saying

“We needed to get an understanding of what our Total Costs of Ownership would be in the cloud and determine how to best leverage our existing Microsoft license investments when we move to AWS. The methodology and resources AWS brought to the project to develop a TCO over 5 years across the full IT estate was excellent. Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) provided us with the insight we needed. The output of the engagement allowed us to compare cost and licensing impacts across multiple scenarios, provided guidance on potential consolidation opportunities and highlighted how we could save up to 53% on our cloud deployment by leveraging BYOL & AWS Dedicated Host solutions.”

Bruno D’Ostilio, Senior Director – Enterprise Cloud & Service Excellence, Pitney Bowes

“The migration result was a wonderful surprise! People didn’t think it could be executed in such a short timeframe, especially given constraints around coronavirus. But we executed the migration as planned. Basic incidents have more or less disappeared, and given that every incident is costly, this is a great result. Even though the TCO calculation process was fast, we are on track, and the business is saving a very significant amount of money.”

“We needed a cloud-specific solution that would suit our business-critical SQL Server applications. Using an AWS Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA), we were able to not only find the AWS solution that was right for our applications, but also understand the most cost-effective strategy for migrating our workloads. Now that we’ve used OLA, we gained the visibility and knowledge to modernize our legacy applications—and business— on AWS.”

Saleem Brahmanapalli, Vice President, Systems Engineering, Pearson

“Even before we migrated, AWS helped us prepare for our migration through an Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) that helped us right-size our instances to control our costs during migration by 18-20%. After migrating our Windows workloads to AWS, we are able to scale up and down easily to handle fluctuating server traffic. Now, we have the freedom to focus on innovation instead of managing our physical servers, and improved our speed to upload and download applications.”
