AWS Step Functions is Now a HIPAA Eligible Service

Posted on: May 31, 2018

AWS Step Functions is now a HIPAA eligible service. You can now use AWS Step Functions to orchestrate distributed applications and workflows containing healthcare-related information, including personal health information (PHI) of users, and information subject to U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

AWS Step Functions lets you build and update eHealth and mHealth applications quickly by arranging the components of your application in a visual workflow. You can use Step Functions to add orchestration to drive repeatable, common tasks in healthcare such as de-identification, patient data collection or monitoring, patient workflow management, and treatment and therapy adherence.

If you already have an executed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with AWS, you can start using AWS Step Functions immediately in the accounts that your BAA covers. If you don’t have an executed BAA with AWS or have any other questions about HIPAA eligible services on AWS, contact AWS Support and we will put you in touch with a representative from our AWS sales team.

HIPAA Eligibility applies to all AWS Regions where AWS Step Functions is available. For more information and best practices on configuring AWS HIPAA Eligible Services to store, process, and transmit PHI, refer to the following resources.
