Overview

In the digital age, it comes as no surprise that printed documents are steadily declining. Once the primary method of consuming content, many of us now favor the convenience of accessing a rich array of media from a single device over cumbersome volumes of books, magazines, journals, user manuals, training documents, and educational materials. But the reality is that digital documents often don’t provide the seamless experience users want.

GTxcel recognized this problem and has dedicated over a decade to creating a digital publishing platform that makes content accessible and engaging for everyone. “When we started our goal was to optimize PDFs to make them easy to share and augment publications’ printed offerings with digital versions,” says Peter Stilson, President and CEO.

The scope of the platform has grown as more content creators choose to go purely digital in a bid to cut costs, grow readership, boost sustainability, reduce carbon footprint, and save natural resources. GTxcel is at the forefront of helping organizations successfully transition to digital by creating slick, intuitive user experiences. As Stilson says: “Our mission is to empower enterprises to quickly connect with customers around the world by delivering content in the formats they’re seeking.”

As user expectations rise, the platform is continually evolving with new features and functionality, including social media integration to make it simple to share information. They are now harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the move towards increasingly dynamic and interactive content while broadening publishers’ reach.

About GTxcel

GTxcel’s cloud-based solutions help publishers, businesses, and institutions transform printed content into an engaging digital reading experience, distributed to the broadest possible audience.

Opportunity | Using Amazon Textract to cut document processing times from 24 hours to minutes

Documents take many different forms, ranging from scientific publications to educational materials, and user manuals. They also contain diverse layouts and data that goes beyond simple text, like images, tables, and forms. Because of this, classifying and extracting the metadata from these rich documents has traditionally involved time-consuming manual work. However, GTxcel is automating data extraction to radically reduce inefficiencies and delays in production.

As Mohammad Salih, Director of Engineering at GTxcel, explains: “Amazon Textract automatically extracts data with a high degree of accuracy and we’re loving the results.” Executive VP and General Manager Kim Keller adds: “Before working with AWS, turning static PDF documents into living, breathing, interactive media took 24 hours. With AI, we can now do this in a matter of minutes.”

When GTxcel’s platform can extract content in multiple languages and optimize them for people with visual impairments, AI and ML are making it easier than ever to deliver inclusive content at scale across industries and regions. Together with AWS and AWS Partner Caylent, GTxcel are exploring how tools such as generative AI can be further integrated to unlock greater value for enterprises and their customers.

Solution | Empowering publishing to turn a new page with Amazon Bedrock

GTxcel started working alongside AWS when they embarked on their cloud journey over 10 years ago. They have since implemented several services to spur on growth and reduce manual workflows by 50 percent. AWS introduced the business to Caylent, who integrated with the GTxcel team to define the project, simplify the milestones to success, and offer hands-on support.

With their guidance, they have been able to automate the identification of content nuances, such as distinguishing advertisement images from regular images, and understanding which text is a heading or pull quote within articles. As Salih explains: “We’re able to fine-tune the content extracted from Amazon Textract using Amazon Bedrock. This means that our platform has all the details needed to build interactive, seamless reader experiences.” Legacy documents can also be brought to life with dynamic elements such as video and optimized for all devices and platforms.

As well as automating processing, GTxcel have unlocked analytics capabilities to help customers extend the lifespan of content and improve engagement. Documents can be updated immediately to maximize value and relevance, without the need for human intervention as per their previous content management system (CMS). What’s more, each document can be analyzed in detail to inform future editorial strategies. Publishers and content creators gain insights into the time spent reading, what users searched for within the document, and even which device it was accessed from.

Outcome | Entering a new chapter of interactivity

Tools such as generative AI are opening the door to more verticals and marketing applications to further transform the way businesses produce, edit, publish, and monetize content. “We now have an endless ability to go after much larger scale opportunities,” says Stilson. This includes automating distribution to ensure content reaches the right audience at the right time and enhancing user experiences with personalized content recommendations and user journeys.

GTxcel even has its sights set on technologies such as augmented reality for reference manuals. Keller explains: “Imagine if you could see an object represented from all angles to understand how to disassemble or repair it, and then order specific parts on the same platform.” The user experience is worlds apart from the complicated manuals customers usually grapple with.

GTxcel continues to seek exciting ways to connect users with content responsively and the platform scales from supporting small and medium-sized businesses to Fortune 500 companies. By digitizing over 7 million pages, they are also helping customers to drive more sustainable operations. Keller says: “Our relationship with AWS has really been a catalyst for moving forward. Rather than maintaining what we’ve always done, AWS is always helping us grow by pursuing new ideas and seizing new technologies.”
