Shane brings expertise to AWS
Shane Sweeney became an AWS Executive in Residence in June 2026. He brings more than 25 years of firsthand experience building and running engineering organizations at scale — most of it under real regulatory, operational, and commercial pressure, where uptime, trust, and speed are not negotiable. He knows what it actually takes to move from ambition to value: not the technology, but the operating model, the org design, and the leverage behind them. What sets him apart is a peer's credibility — he has run the trade-offs he now advises on, and speaks to customer executives as someone who has fought the same battles in the same trenches.
Shane's experience before joining AWS
Prior to AWS, Shane most recently served as SVP of Technology at FanDuel — the US business of Flutter Entertainment — running an engineering organization of more than 500 people across Sportsbook, Daily Fantasy, Racing, free-to-play, Media, FanDuel TV+, and Cloud. His work there spanned platform engineering, reliability, developer productivity, cost optimization, cybersecurity, and enterprise AI transformation. He led that scale inside one of the most demanding environments in technology — a real-money, real-time, heavily regulated business where peak-event load (the NFL season culminating in the Super Bowl), fraud and AML controls, responsible-gaming obligations, and dynamic risk all have to hold at once.
Shane spent over a decade inside the Paddy Power → Flutter → FanDuel group, growing from engineering management to the executive team. Along the way he built the operating model most fast-scaling organizations still struggle with: how to grow output without growing overhead in lockstep — standardizing the commodity majority of the stack aggressively while protecting the areas of true differentiation, and treating AI as workflow infrastructure rather than a novelty. He designed a global “follow-the-sun” delivery model that raised productivity while cutting unsocial after-hours work, led a datacenter consolidation that saved €12M a year, and managed budgets in the hundreds of millions across engineering and infrastructure.
Earlier in his career, Shane held systems-integration and technical consulting roles — at Morse Solutions, PFH, and Origina — working across enterprise infrastructure, storage, and platform engineering in Banking & Finance and beyond.
AI philosophy
For Shane, the constraint is rarely the technology — it's the organization. AI creates value the moment it stops being a demo and becomes infrastructure: embedded in how work actually gets done, governed well enough to run in a regulated environment, and supported by an operating model that has actually changed to absorb it. Deploying AI onto an unchanged operating model, in his experience, is the most common way transformation stalls. His natural unit of analysis is the system — architecture, team topology, cost model, and adoption considered together, not as separate levers — and his conviction is that agents earn autonomy the way a trading desk does: within deliberately designed risk limits, proven before they are widened. Build leverage before adding people; measure outcomes, not activity; make complexity earn its place.
