Amazon EC2 H1 instances are a new generation of Amazon EC2 Storage Optimized instances designed for applications that require low cost, high disk throughput and high sequential disk I/O access to very large data sets. Offering the best price/performance in the magnetic disk storage EC2 instance family, H1 instances are ideal for data-intensive workloads such as MapReduce-based workloads, distributed file systems, such as HDFS and MapR-FS, network file systems, log or data processing applications such as Apache Kafka, and big data workload clusters.
Benefits
Speed
With more vCPUs, memory and networking performance paired with the high-throughput local HDD storage provided by H1 instances, customers are able to significantly increase the speed of processing very large data sets for data-intensive applications.
Lower Costs
By offering more vCPUs and memory per TB of local HDD-based instance storage, H1 instances drive down costs and overall TCO by reducing the amount of unused storage for some large data set workloads.
Features
High performance
Powered by 2.3 GHz Intel Xeon E5 2686 v4 (Broadwell) processors with larger L3 cache sizes, H1 instances provide up to 64 vCPUs and 256 GiB of DRAM. Local storage is optimized to deliver high disk throughput for sequential I/O delivering 1.15 GB/s read/write for 2 MiB block sizes.
Balance of compute and storage
As a complement to the Dense Storage Optimized EC2 instance family, H1 instances offer more vCPUs and more memory per terabyte of local magnetic storage compared to D2 instances. The largest instance size, h1.16xlarge, provides 64 vCPUs and 16TB of HDD-based instance storage.
Enhanced networking
H1 instances support Enhanced Networking based on Elastic Network Adapter (ENA) technology providing customers with high throughput, low latency interfaces for networking. H1 instances offer up to 25 Gbps of network bandwidth and up to 10 Gbps for smaller instance sizes.
