NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP on AWS

Storage and data management services for a SQL Server environment on AWS

This Quick Start automatically deploys a Microsoft SQL Server environment that receives its storage and enterprise-class data management capabilities from a NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP system running on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The Quick Start uses NetApp Cloud Manager to deploy and configure Cloud Volumes ONTAP.

Cloud Volumes ONTAP is a software-only version of Data ONTAP, which is the data management operating system from NetApp that is used on physical NetApp storage appliances. With Cloud Volumes ONTAP, the operating system has been customized to run as an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance. With Cloud Volumes ONTAP on AWS, you can spin up a new enterprise class data management system in minutes on the cloud.

This Quick Start was developed by NetApp in collaboration with AWS. NetApp is an APN Partner.

  •  What you'll build
  • Use this Quick Start to automatically set up the following NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP environment on AWS:

    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) configured with a public subnet and an attached internet gateway, if you choose the end-to-end deployment option. If you choose the option to deploy the Quick Start into an existing VPC, the Quick Start requires you to select an existing VPC and subnet.
    • An AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with fine-grained permissions for access to AWS services necessary for the deployment process.
    • Security groups for each instance or function to restrict access to only necessary protocols and ports.
    • A fully configured NetApp Cloud Manager instance that deploys the Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance used in this Quick Start.
    • A Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM with SQL Server 2016 Standard instance connected to storage from the Cloud Volumes ONTAP instance.
  •  How to deploy
  • To build your NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP environment on AWS, follow the instructions in the deployment guide. The deployment process includes these steps:

    1. If you don't already have an AWS account, sign up at
    2. Subscribe to the Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP and NetApp Cloud Manager in AWS Marketplace.
    3. Create a NetApp Cloud account.
    4. Launch the Quick Start. Each deployment takes about 45 minutes. You can choose from two options:
    5. Access your Cloud Volumes ONTAP system by connecting to the SQL Server or Cloud Manager instance.

Amazon may share user-deployment information with the AWS Partner that collaborated with AWS on this solution.

  •  Cost and licenses
  • You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

This Quick Start uses the AWS Marketplace offerings for NetApp products. To use this Quick Start, you will need to subscribe to the Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP and NetApp Cloud Manager in AWS Marketplace.

Tip     After you deploy the Quick Start, we recommend that you enable the AWS Cost and Usage Report to track costs associated with the Quick Start. This report delivers billing metrics to an S3 bucket in your account. It provides cost estimates based on usage throughout each month, and finalizes the data at the end of the month. For more information about the report, see the AWS documentation.

The AWS CloudFormation templates for this Quick Start include configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as database size, will affect the cost of deployment. For cost estimates, see the pricing pages for each AWS service you will be using. Prices are subject to change.
