Deploy ONTAP Cloud on AWS into a new VPC

(or deploy ONTAP Cloud into an existing VPC)
Subscription to NetApp AMIs required; see guide

To get started, follow the step-by-step instructions in the Quick Start deployment guide. To see a full list of Quick Starts reference deployments, see the catalog.

This Quick Start automatically deploys a Microsoft SQL Server 2014 environment that receives its storage and enterprise-class data management capabilities from a NetApp ONTAP Cloud system running on AWS. The Quick Start uses NetApp OnCommand Cloud Manager to deploy and configure ONTAP Cloud.

ONTAP Cloud is a software-only version of Data ONTAP, which is the data management operating system from NetApp that is used on physical NetApp storage appliances. With ONTAP Cloud, the operating system has been customized to run as an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance. With ONTAP Cloud on AWS, you can spin up a new enterprise class data management system in minutes on the cloud.

This Quick Start deploys ONTAP Cloud with SQL Server using AWS CloudFormation templates. It offers two deployment options: you can build a new AWS infrastructure for your ONTAP Cloud stack, or deploy the software into your existing AWS infrastructure. Each deployment takes about 45 minutes.

  • What you'll build

    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) configured with a public subnet, if you choose the end-to-end deployment option. If you choose the option to deploy the Quick Start into an existing VPC, the Quick Start requires you to select an existing VPC and subnet.
    • An AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with fine-grained permissions for access to AWS services necessary for the deployment process.
    • Security groups for each instance or function to restrict access to only necessary protocols and ports.
    • A fully configured OnCommand Cloud Manager instance that deploys the ONTAP Cloud instance used in this Quick Start.
    • A Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM with SQL Server 2014 Standard instance connected to storage from the ONTAP Cloud instance.

For details, see the Quick Start deployment guide.

  • Deployment details

You can deploy your NetApp ONTAP Cloud environment on AWS in about 45 minutes:

    1. Prepare your AWS account.
    2. Subscribe to the Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for NetApp ONTAP Cloud and NetApp OnCommand Cloud Manager in the AWS Marketplace.
    3. Launch the Quick Start. You can choose from two options:
      - Deploy into a new VPC (view template)
      - Deploy into an existing VPC (view template)
    4. Access your ONTAP Cloud system by connecting to the SQL Server or OnCommand Cloud Manager instance.

For complete details, see the Quick Start deployment guide.

  • Cost and licenses

You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

This Quick Start uses the AWS Marketplace offerings for NetApp products. In order to use this Quick Start you will need to subscribe to the Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for NetApp OnCommand Cloud Manager and NetApp ONTAP Cloud in the AWS Marketplace.

The AWS CloudFormation template for this Quick Start includes configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as database size, will affect the cost of deployment. For cost estimates, see the pricing pages for each AWS service you will be using. Prices are subject to change.
