HDR to SDR Tone Mapping Now Available with AWS Elemental MediaConvert

Posted on: Mar 10, 2020

AWS Elemental MediaConvert now offers tone mapping technology to perform HDR to SDR color space conversion. With this processing, you can create both HDR and SDR outputs from a single HDR master video, without having parallel mezzanine workflows.

Since there isn’t a standard way to map the larger color space and higher luminance levels of HDR into the smaller color space and lower luminance levels of SDR, the HDR to SDR conversion is often performed by re-grading content. The MediaConvert tone mapping process is designed to approximate the outcome of HDR to SDR re-grading. This new conversion is available in the color corrector pre-processor for no additional charge in the MediaConvert Pro tier.

With MediaConvert, audio and video providers can easily and reliably transcode on-demand content for broadcast and multiscreen delivery. MediaConvert functions independently or as part of AWS Media Services, a family of services that form the foundation of cloud-based workflows and offer the capabilities needed to transport, transcode, package, and deliver audio and video.
