Key Benefits
Overview
The Port of Brisbane is managed by Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL). It is one of Australia’s fastest-growing container ports, handling approximately $72 billion in international trade in FY24. A key challenge PBPL faced was integrating sustainability into complex operations spanning water, waste, energy, and emissions management.
Seeking to modernise its practices, PBPL collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and AWS Partner TechConnect to build a modern data platform, advancing its sustainability agenda and driving operational efficiencies. The solution supports ESG goals and sustainability reporting and contributes to tracking KPIs for a $500 million sustainability-linked loan, setting new benchmarks for sustainable port operations.
About Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd
The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) is the manager and developer of one of Australia’s fastest-growing container ports, with approximately $72 billion in international trade handled through the Port of Brisbane in FY24. PBPL is committed to advancing sustainable practices across its operations, supporting environmental, social, and economic prosperity for Queensland and beyond.
Opportunity | Modernising Sustainability Practices for a Growing Port
The Port of Brisbane is managed and developed by the PBPL. It is one of Australia’s fastest-growing container ports handling approximately $72 billion in international trade in FY24. PBPL faced a significant challenge: integrating sustainability into its operations to meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals and maintain compliance with a $500 million sustainability linked loan it had secured. Craig Wilson, head of sustainability at PBPL, highlighted the stakes: “Our compass was set—to be the Australia’s leading port and logistics hub, with sustainability as our North Star.” With complex operations spanning water, waste, energy, and emissions management, PBPL sought a robust and centralised solution to track, analyse, and act on selected sustainability metrics.
Without a modern data platform, PBPL risked inefficiencies in data management and sustainability reporting, limiting its ability to respond effectively to resource management challenges. Irving van der Merwe, enterprise architect at PBPL, noted, “The lack of real-time data was holding us back from actionable insights, limiting our ability to proactively address sustainability challenges.” Recognizing the urgency of these challenges, PBPL sought a partner to help digitise its sustainability data management while fostering innovation and accountability.
Solution | Unifying Data for Real-Time Insights and Action
PBPL collaborated with AWS and AWS Partner TechConnect to create a modern data platform for sustainability. Built on AWS’s scalable and secure cloud infrastructure, the solution integrated disparate data sources—ranging from solar energy usage and water quality metrics to waste management data—into a centralised, real-time dashboard. This centralisation enabled PBPL to streamline data management across solar, water, waste, and financial metrics, improving visibility and decision-making capabilities.
The solution relied on AWS’s robust suite of services, with Databricks on AWS as the data platform, complemented by native AWS services to deliver results. Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) provided secure and scalable storage for selected sustainability data, while AWS IoT Core facilitated real-time data ingestion from IoT-enabled devices monitoring environmental conditions. Additionally, AWS Lambda enabled seamless orchestration of data processing tasks. By adopting AWS Well-Architected Framework, TechConnect ensured the platform met high standards of performance, security, and reliability.
Steve Dodd, general manager at TechConnect, says, “Our mission is to help organisations like PBPL harness technology to solve their biggest sustainability challenges. With AWS, we created a solution that’s both impactful and scalable.”
The modern data platform for sustainability empowered PBPL to visualise and interpret sustainability metrics instantly. This capability allowed teams to make data-driven decisions to reduce emissions, optimize energy use, and improve waste management practices, all while fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.
Outcome | Achieving Reporting Gains and Decarbonisation
The collaboration between PBPL, TechConnect, and AWS has transformed PBPL’s approach to ESG data management, delivering measurable outcomes aligned with key sustainability goals. One standout achievement includes an improvement in sustainability reporting efficiency, enabling teams to transition from manual data compilation to proactive decision-making and more informed actions.
PBPL was able to ensure its rooftop solar systems were performing at an optimal level, thanks to the platform’s ability to optimise solar energy usage through precise, actionable insights. These improvements not only reduced operational costs but also directly supported PBPL’s commitment to its 2030 goal of a positive net environmental benefit, including net zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 through solar initiatives.
The platform’s real-time monitoring capabilities, encompassing data across four of PBPL’s sustainability focus areas, enhanced transparency and supported reporting against PBPL’s $500 million sustainability-linked loan. By aligning operational improvements with financial incentives, PBPL is achieving consistent progress toward its ESG objectives, showcasing the measurable value of its sustainability initiatives.
Reflecting on the platform’s impact, Craig Wilson shared, “We now have greater transparency across selected sustainability data, from water usage to solar power efficiency, in a single easy to use dashboard.” This sentiment was echoed by Irving van der Merwe, who noted, “This platform stands out by providing real-time, granular data to drive meaningful action.”
Emphasising the broader commitment to sustainability, Craig Wilson further noted, “Sustainability is integral to the Port of Brisbane’s overall business strategy, and we are committed to embedding sustainable practices across our operations. Our data platform has been instrumental in providing comprehensive, actionable insights into our resource management.”
Looking ahead, the Port of Brisbane will continue to investigate opportunities to leverage advanced analytics as part of its sustainability efforts. Initially developed to enhance sustainability data management, the port’s modern data platform has since evolved to support a range of operational improvements, optimising efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Beyond this initiative, the Port of Brisbane will continue its focus on automating data collection processes and integrating more sustainability data into a single, centralised platform. This will create a single source of truth, enabling more accurate, data-driven decision-making across all port operations. By continuously enhancing its data ecosystem, the port is setting new benchmarks for efficiency and sustainability in maritime logistics.
Sustainability is integral to the Port of Brisbane’s overall business strategy, and we are committed to embedding sustainable practices across our operations. Our data platform has been instrumental in providing comprehensive, actionable insights into our resource management.
