Overview

Just Eat Takeaway.com (JET) is one of the world’s leading global on-demand food delivery companies. It employs over 2,000 people—many of whom are engineers—across 300 teams. Like many fast-growing tech companies, JET had a complex infrastructure that expanded rapidly through multiple acquisitions. This resulted in a fragmented environment that was built on legacy systems, leading to limited visibility into spend. So, the company wanted to boost its cost management practices on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides exceptional reliability, security, and performance. JET’s optimization journey began by engaging AWS Partner Finout to help create visibility, consistency, and accountability across a decentralized and fast-moving organization.

About JET

Netherlands-based Just Eat Takeaway.com (JET) is a global online food delivery marketplace that serves 17 countries.

Opportunity | Reducing complexity at scale

Running thousands of applications and features on AWS, JET saw an opportunity to improve cost attribution, strengthen its cost governance, and drive collaboration across engineering teams. A series of acquisitions brought together a wide range of applications, but many applications were tagged inconsistently, making it difficult to gain visibility into spend. Even with centralized financial operations (FinOps) efforts, nearly half of the company’s infrastructure costs remained unallocated.

The company recognized that adopting the right tools would be key. JET  wanted to improve dashboard navigation and time to insight while making  the tools intuitive to use for both the engineering and FinOps.

About AWS Partner Finout

Finout is the first self-service cloud cost observability platform that combines business metrics with your cost, slicing it up to customers, features, and unit metrics. With Finout, FinOps, Finance, and DevOps can help their organizations make healthier business decisions that improve efficiency, pricing, and go-to-market strategy.

Solution | Creating a user-friendly FinOps solution for engineers

JET found the usability and flexibility that it required in the self-service cloud cost observability solution that Finout offered. JET’s FinOps team used the solution to roll out a standardized dashboard model, making it possible for teams  to duplicate prebuilt views and immediately take ownership of their cloud costs. “After we had confidence and  mastery with Finout’s solution, it became much easier to spread the message internally,” says Galán.

At the core of this transformation was Finout’s Virtual Tags API. This feature offered a dynamic allocation engine that  helped JET attribute costs daily across teams and services. As a result, the company was able to account for shifts in  organizational structures, even without perfect tagging—a critical capability in an infrastructure that’s shaped by  legacy systems. “Virtual Tags are the foundation of almost everything we do,” says Galán. “They help us organize  spending in a way that’s easy to understand, even without ideal tagging.”

In addition, Finout’s MegaBill and Data Explorer features provided fast, self-serve exploration and storytelling.  Engineers could filter spend by service or time period to gain insights into performance, while leadership received  clear visibility into which costs were growing, which were optimized, and why. “We’re getting ahead of spend and  shaping behavior so that we can act proactively before things go off course,” says Kim Wilson, senior cloud FinOps  analyst at JET.

Finout’s solutions are underpinned by AWS technology. The AWS Partner uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) for secure and resizable compute capacity and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for object  storage. And to simplify database management, Finout uses Amazon DynamoDB, a serverless, fully managed,  distributed NoSQL database. Alongside other AWS services, these help Finout to support business operations for JET.

Outcome | Accelerating insight delivery to optimize spend

By implementing Finout’s solution, JET deployed more than 250 dashboards, helping teams self-serve insights and  take informed action. The dashboards accelerated insight delivery by replacing manual spreadsheet tracking with  dynamic, near real-time exploration. This helped increase FinOps adoption by nearly 20 times, going from 40 users to  more than 700 engineers now managing cost data actively. As a result, the company reduced its unallocated  infrastructure spend from 45 percent to 21 percent, unlocking new accountability across teams. The clarity that  Finout’s solution provided helped JET better understand what was driving spend—from disaster recovery investments  to new services. So, the company was able to scale more confidently on AWS without worrying about hidden  inefficiencies. “It gives you confidence that the optimization you’re pushing for is actually happening—because now  you can see it clearly,” says Galán.

Embedding Finout in its day-to-day operations, JET is shifting from reactive to proactive cost management, and  financial planning is becoming a cornerstone of its culture. The company now pilots departmental forecasts by using  Finout’s solution to enhance accountability through a shift-left approach. This software development approach  emphasizes moving quality assurance and security activities to the earliest stage of development rather than waiting  until the end. “Using Finout’s solution helped us present insights to leadership and engineers in a way that we  couldn’t before,” says Wilson. Empowered with data, engineers are making better decisions. Supported by insights,  leadership is investing smarter. What began as a tooling change has turned into a foundational shift in how JET sees,  manages, and grows its cloud infrastructure. “Leaders see the numbers and understand the story,” says Galán. “That  gave them confidence to support our AWS growth because the increases are backed by data, not assumptions.”
