Modernizing medical research, education, and clinical care with MUL-CT and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud
MUL-CT is shaping the future of healthcare innovation and patient care by accelerating academic medical research powered by a secure and sovereign digital foundation using the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
Overview
Founded in 2024, the Medical University Lausitz—Carl Thiem (MUL-CT) aims to redesign and modernize healthcare in Brandenburg and the wider Lausitz region. As Brandenburg's first state university hospital, it was established to address major strategic and future-focused healthcare challenges, working in partnership with the Lusatia Model Region for Health. Its work centers on understanding healthcare systems and advancing digital solutions to improve them. Using Amazon Web Services (AWS), MUL-CT is creating a cloud-first, data-driven infrastructure without constraints. As Chief Digital Officer Martin Peuker says, “Our vision is to make Lausitz a model region when it comes to digital healthcare innovation. We’re building a forward-looking medical university to set new standards for patient care, medical education, and regional innovation.”
About the Medical University Lausitz—Carl Thiem (MUL-CT)
Established in 2024, MUL-CT combines medical education, clinical expertise, and applied research to support healthcare transformation in Brandenburg and the wider Lausitz region.
Balancing cutting-edge research, care, and education with uncompromising digital sovereignty
Because it handles sensitive patient and research data, MUL-CT is governed by strict German and European digital sovereignty regulations. It uses the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, the only fully featured, independently operated sovereign cloud designed to meet the stringent sensitive data needs of European governments and enterprises. This helps MUL-CT accelerate medical research while fully meeting regulatory and compliance requirements.
“Working in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, we can use sensitive health and research data for artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and translational medicine at scale. This will help us unlock breakthroughs in imaging, genomics, and real-world evidence studies, and improve patient outcomes in the region,” says Peuker. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud provides a “stable foundation for innovation,” he continues, which opens research possibilities through institution-wide platforms that can use data securely and effectively. And it helps MUL deliver initiatives like Hospital @ Home, telemedicine, primary care centers, and mobile prevention, which are crucial to Germany’s healthcare transformation.
Creating a model healthcare region with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud
MUL is redefining the blueprint of healthcare by combining “digital sovereignty, clinical excellence, and academic innovation,” says Peuker. This means not only forging new connections between medical education, healthcare delivery, and research, but also building a far broader network of collaboration across the region. Peuker says, “The AWS European Sovereign Cloud can help us enable a regional network of hospitals, research institutions, universities, and partners while meeting legal, ethical, and academic obligations.”
