Nintendo Modernizes Push Notifications to Scale Across 100 Million Devices

Overview

Nintendo, a global leader in gaming innovation, sought to modernize its push notification system to support the ever-growing Nintendo Switch user base, which reached 123 million players between April 2023 and March 2024. Its legacy system faced limitations in handling the increasing scale and complexity.

To overcome these challenges, Nintendo transitioned to Amazon Web Services (AWS) managed services such as AWS Fargate, Network Load Balancer (NLB), Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS). The new system adopted AWS serverless solutions, advanced TCP tuning, client IP preservation, and automated deployment workflows with GitHub Actions to enhance scalability and streamline operations. Amazon SQS played a critical role in message queuing, enabling efficient delivery of notifications to connected devices by integrating with session information in Amazon DynamoDB and distributing them through AWS Fargate tasks.

As a result, Nintendo achieved stable operation for 100 million concurrent devices, reduced infrastructure overhead, and ensured seamless notifications for updates, peer activity, and downloads. This transformation not only improved operational efficiency but also prepared Nintendo’s infrastructure for future scalability and innovation.
