AWS Partners with LoRaWAN®

LoRaWAN® is a mark used under license from the LoRa Alliance®.

The LoRaWAN standard delivers on the promise of sending small amounts of data (bytes), over long distances (10km+), using a very small amount of power (mW). LoRaWAN also offers hundreds of ready-to-use unique devices. Here we highlight the different ways to ingest, create, and manage your LoRaWAN IoT Devices using AWS IoT and partner connectivity solutions, enabling you to take advantage of AWS services such as Amazon S3, Amazon SageMaker, AWS IoT Analytics, AWS Appsync, and Amazon CloudFront.

LoRa Alliance

The LoRaWAN specification is managed through the LoRa Alliance. The LoRa Alliance is an open industry organization, comprised of hundreds of companies, responsible for the standardization and certification of LoRaWAN. There are over 270 LoRaWAN certified devices available in the alliance catalog today and this number grows daily. To browse LoRaWAN certified devices, visit the LoRa Alliance catalog.

Connecting LoRaWAN devices to AWS IoT Core

All devices need to communicate via a LoRaWAN gateway. There are three ways to connect a LoRaWAN device: a public network, a private network with LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS) in the cloud, or a private network with LNS on the gateway.

Public Network

LoRaWAN today has over 137 operators who offer public networks. We work with AWS Partners such as Actility and The Things Industries to make it easy for customers to build applications on AWS IoT. They have created AWS CloudFormation templates to easily ingest data from public operator networks to AWS IoT Core.

Private Networks - LNS in the Cloud

AWS offers AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN® as a native AWS LNS service. AWS worked with gateway manufacturers Browan, Kerlink, Laird, Multitech, and Tektelic to qualify a number of their gateways with AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN. These Partner solutions cover many use cases for both indoor and outdoor applications, such as for smart buildings and asset tracking.

Private Networks - LNS on the Gateway

AWS Partners Multitech and Actility offer LNS on the gateway solutions. They have integrated AWS IoT Greengrass with their hardware-enabling customers to act on the data at the edge as well as sending the data to the cloud directly to AWS IoT Core.
