What are Single Region Recovery capabilities in ARC?
ARC's Single Region (multi-AZ) recovery solutions, zonal shift and zonal autoshift, help you shift traffic from an impaired Availability Zone to a healthy Availability Zone. These are Single Region capabilities because they operate entirely within one AWS Region, shifting traffic between Availability Zones in that Region rather than across Regions.
What is zonal shift and zonal autoshift?
Zonal shift allows you to manually shift traffic for a supported resource away from an impaired Availability Zone to a healthy Availability Zone in the same AWS Region. When you detect an issue—such as a bad code deployment causing latency or an AZ-level impairment—you can start a zonal shift to immediately redirect traffic and reduce impact on your users.
Zonal shifts are temporary, with an initial expiration you set (up to 72 hours) that can be extended. You can cancel a zonal shift at any time to return traffic to the original AZ.
Zonal autoshift authorizes AWS to automatically shift your application's traffic away from an impaired Availability Zone on your behalf. When AWS internal telemetry detects an AZ impairment that could potentially impact customers, ARC automatically starts shifting traffic for your configured resources to healthy AZs—without requiring any manual intervention.
Zonal autoshift also includes mandatory practice runs that regularly test your application's ability to operate without one AZ, ensuring you are always prepared for a real event.
