The healthcare industry is undergoing changes, driven by the need to improve patient care while managing rising costs and operational challenges. Traditional healthcare models, characterized by reactive care with in-person visits are being reevaluated considering increasing demands on healthcare systems and providers.

According to this report from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), US healthcare spending in 2023 was $4.9 trillion which is $ 14,570 per person. And this has been growing Y.O.Y at 7.5%. This huge spending has not resulted in better patient experience and improved patient care. Patients have to book an appointment, drive to the clinic, wait for their turn, then wait more in the examination room, then only get to spend 15-20 mins with the doctor, make the necessary co-payment and drive back home. This is an average of 1.5 hours to two hours per visit. With an average of two-three visits a year, a routine doctor’s visit is about six hours per person per year with suboptimal experience.

In response to these challenges, Connected Care solutions enable healthcare organizations to transform care delivery through remote monitoring and data-driven interventions. Connected Care in healthcare refers to the use of technology to connect patients, providers, and data to improve access to care, enhance coordination, and optimize health outcomes. These solutions leverage technology to enable remote monitoring, data-driven decision making, and proactive interventions, improving patient outcomes through reduced hospital readmissions and optimized resource allocation. Connected Care offers to save cost and time, improve patient experience and reduce the burden on hospitals and clinicians.

About Validic

Validic is an AWS Advanced Partner revolutionizing healthcare through intelligent digital care solutions. The company specializes in remote patient monitoring (RPM), clinical workflow optimization, and AI-powered patient engagement that transforms raw health data into actionable clinical insights. Validic leverages AWS services to support millions of patient lives and 7,500+ healthcare providers through its comprehensive platform that seamlessly integrates with leading EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems, including Epic and Oracle Health. The platform’s device ecosystem connects over 600 wearables and medical devices—from fitness trackers to glucometers—creating a unified health data stream that flows directly into existing clinical workflows.

In this post, you will learn how Validic uses AWS services to transform healthcare delivery through remote monitoring, data-driven decision making, and automated patient engagement to build out a Connected Care platform.

Business Impact

Today’s healthcare challenges affect both patients and providers. Traditional healthcare visits require patients to follow lengthy logistics only to have a brief clinical consultation. For patients with chronic conditions requiring regular monitoring, such as diabetes or hypertension, these challenges are amplified.
Traditional in-person visits have two main challenges:

  • They cost between $100-$200 per visit
  • Their reactive approach can lead to preventable complications and higher healthcare costs

This cycle of reactive care and resource constraints highlights the need for more efficient, proactive healthcare delivery solutions.

The strain on healthcare providers is equally significant. The American Medical Association reports that 45% of U.S. physicians experienced burnout in 2023-24, primarily due to administrative responsibilities and high patient volumes. This report from National Library of Medicine suggests that U.S. hospitals operate at or over capacity during peak periods, creating additional pressure on healthcare systems and staff while also reducing the quality of care delivered.

Solution Overview

Validic’s Connected Care solution uses it’s two core products, Inform Health IoT and Impact, work together to deliver seamless, actionable health data. The Inform platform integrates data from over 600 wearables and medical devices, including Fitbit trackers, glucometers, blood pressure monitors, and other personal wearables, directly into EHR and care systems. This allows real-time monitoring of patient vitals, such as heart rate, glucose levels, or physical activity, without the need for office visits.

Validic’s Impact platform uses Amazon Bedrock‘s generative AI capabilities to provide personalized care plans and streamlined clinician dashboards. By analyzing patient data trends, identifying risks, and providing actionable summaries, Impact streamlines population health management and saves clinicians up to 8 hours per week. Together, these platforms collect and contextualize patient-generated health data, making it accessible for patients and actionable for providers.

Solution Architecture

The following architecture diagram illustrates how Validic’s Connected Care solution integrates with AWS services to enable real-time health monitoring and automated patient engagement. Figure 1 shows the end-to-end flow from data collection through health IoT devices to clinical insights delivery, demonstrating how patient-generated health data is securely processed, analyzed, and made actionable for healthcare providers through their existing EHR systems.

Figure 1: Validic Architecture Diagram

  1. Health monitoring begins at Validic’s Inform with seamless integration with health IoT devices and wearables ingesting data in near-real-time. The solution begins with real-time data collection from health IoT devices, where Validic Inform syncs patient-generated health data from wearables and devices, like blood pressure cuffs or smart scales, into Validic’s Inform Platform, via secure APIs.
  2. Validic Impact consumes all the incoming patient-generated health data from Validic’s Inform streaming services
  3. Validic Impact stores the copy of the data in the internal database to use for all its program related workflows.
  4. Once data is received, it’s immediately processed against the rules and alerts configured for each patient. These rules are set up on a program-by-program basis, but Impact allows fine-tuned personalization on a per-patient basis.
  5. When alerting rules trigger, Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) delivers the resulting alerts through various channels: push notifications for patients, and SMS and email for clinicians.
  6. The high-risk alerts are sent to the clinician messaging system in the EHR, so they receive these critical alerts in their EHR workflow, without needing to log into another system or leave the EHR.
  7. The solution evaluates patient data in real-time while simultaneously recording measurements in the EHR flowsheet. This integration gives clinicians immediate access to the data directly within their familiar EHR environment, eliminating the need to switch between different systems.
  8. Validic’s newest feature, Validic Sparks, offers generative AI features using large-language models from providers such as Anthropic (powered by Amazon Bedrock) to detect patterns, identify risks, and create insights using the data from their connected devices as well as their program alerts and goals. This helps the care team gain quick situational awareness inside a data-dense workflow, with potentially hundreds of submitted readings since the last time they interacted with the patient.
  9. Finally, all of the measurements, Sparks insights, program goals, alerts, and configuration are offered inside a SMART/FHIR application, embedded directly into the EHR via industry standards.

Why Validic and AWS?

Validic’s strength lies in its seamless device integration, deeply integrated EHR workflows, clinician-friendly dashboards, and generative AI-powered insights, making it ideal for RPM. Impact specializes in personalization and risk detection for an end-to-end Connected Care solution. AWS complements this with unparalleled scalability, security, and telehealth capabilities, ensuring a connected healthcare solution that can serve millions of patients while meeting Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. The synergy between Validic’s solutions and AWS services creates a closed-loop system that is proactive, efficient, and patient-centered.
