In a world where data management needs are constantly evolving, the partnership between a cloud-native distributed SQL database like YugabyteDB Aeon and the high-performance, cost-effective AWS Graviton processor offers a powerful advantage to developers. From YugabyteDB’s roots at Facebook to its pioneering status in the open-source database community, the alignment with AWS Graviton is the latest chapter in its journey to deliver unparalleled scalability, resilience, and efficiency. This post delves deep into the synergies of this powerful duo, showcasing why they form the ideal pairing for modern, distributed SQL developers, and why businesses should take note.
Introducing YugabyteDB
YugabyteDB‘s co-founders are database builders and visionaries who first collaborated at Facebook, where they scaled the platform from millions to billions of users. The YugabyteDB founders recognized the trends they saw there, microservices, containerization, and open source, would soon impact many, if not all, businesses. Building on the insights from their experience, they developed YugabyteDB, a distributed SQL database designed for global-scale, cloud-native applications.
Launching YugabyteDB first public beta in 2017, YugabyteDB was offered in both community and enterprise editions. In 2019, YugabyteDB made YugabyteDB completely open source under the Apache 2.0 license – the opposite of what many database companies were doing at the time. Our active YugabyteDB community boasts over 8,500 Slack members, with many more active across multiple channels.
YugabyteDB and AWS Graviton
YugabyteDB is a cloud-native distributed SQL database with built-in resilience and on-demand scale. This is essential to meet the needs of large and complex applications. In 2022, YugabyteDB became the first and only distributed SQL database certified for the AWS Graviton Service Ready Partner Program. Now our fully-managed DBaaS service YugabyteDB Aeon is available on AWS Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances. This means YugabyteDB customers can take advantage of the performance and cost benefits of AWS Graviton based cloud infrastructure. Our managed SaaS offering on AWS is also available on Graviton instances. This allows customers to leverage the superior performance and cost efficiencies of AWS Graviton.
Performance Benchmarks with YugabyteDB and AWS Graviton
Amazon EC2 provides the broadest and deepest portfolio of compute instances. AWS Graviton processors add even more choice to help customers optimize performance, cost, and carbon footprint for their workloads.
Recent benchmarks revealed for these clusters that YugabyteDB on AWS Graviton instances delivers better performance and is 22% more cost effective than on traditional x86 instances including Amazon EC2 M5.
Growth
Currently we have over 8500+ clusters deployed on Graviton and we are adding over a 1000+ clusters month-over-month for our free tier users on AWS, and anticipate a 2x growth of these free tier clusters by the end of the year.
We are experiencing consistent growth in demand for YugabyteDB Managed Free Trier subscription as in the graph below for month over month new subscription sign ups below:
