Overview and registration process
What is AWS DeepRacer?
AWS DeepRacer is a 1/18th scale race car that gives you an interesting and fun way to get started with reinforcement learning (RL). With AWS DeepRacer, you now have a way to get hands-on with RL, experiment, and learn through autonomous driving. You can get started with the virtual car and tracks in the cloud-based 3D racing simulator. Read all the details about it here.
What is the AWS Innovate DeepRacer challenge?
AWS Innovate DeepRacer challenge is a competition that is part of the global AWS DeepRacer League. AWS Innovate registered racers with the 3 fastest lap times in the October Virtual Circuit will receive AWS Credits. Racers can submit their models from October 1, 2019, 12:01am, until October 31, 2019, 11:59pm London Time.
Participants enrolled in the AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge who successfully submit an entry to the AWS DeepRacer League leaderboard in October will earn a one-time AWS credit of $25 value, which they will receive via email by November 15th.
How does the challenge work, how do I sign up, and how do I qualify for the prizes?
Race! Submit your entry in October’s race of the AWS DeepRacer Virtual Circuit. We will track the performance of the Innovate registered participants on the leaderboard, and the top 3 performers will then receive AWS Credits. Remember, to qualify for entry into the AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge:
1. You must be registered for AWS Innovate here.
2. You must be registered for the AWS Innovate DeepRacer challenge here.
PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH REGISTRATION FORMS USING THE EMAIL ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR AWS ACCOUNT. While you will need a credit card to create an AWS account, you will not be charged to create the account. You can create an AWS account here.
3. You need to submit your model to the AWS DeepRacer League Virtual Circuit leaderboard between October 1 and October 31, 2019. You can sign up and start building in the AWS DeepRacer console.
By November 15, you will see your lap times and scores on the leaderboard for this challenge. AWS Credits will be provided via email to the top 3 performers registered to AWS Innovate specifically (not the overall AWS DeepRacer League) in the October race. Winners will be announced via email and on the website. In addition, all participants enrolled in the AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge who successfully submit an entry to the AWS DeepRacer League leaderboard in October will earn a one-time AWS credit of $25 value, which they will receive via email by November 15th.
For AWS to recognize you as a challenge participant and for you to qualify for the AWS credits, you must agree and comply with the basic program terms, including by providing your email address and AWS account ID, so that we can check your race scores. For full details, please read the AWS DeepRacer League rules here.
How do I sign up for AWS DeepRacer League?
Do I have to use the same email address to register for AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge and AWS Innovate Online Conference?
Yes! To ensure you can qualify to compete for one of the AWS credits, you must use the same email address for both the AWS Innovate event registration form, and the AWS Innovate DeepRacer challenge form, and this email address has to match your AWS account email address. AWS DeepRacer will use email addresses and account IDs to identify top racers from the program, and show the participants on the leaderboard by November 15.
Resources to get started
Where can I learn how to get started with AWS DeepRacer?
Whether you are new to machine learning or ready to build on your existing skills, we can help you get ready to race. See resources to get started here.
At AWS Innovate Online Conference on October 17, 2019, we have live sessions on Twitch to show developers, even those with no prior machine learning experience, how to get started with the basics of reinforcement learning (a branch of machine learning that's ideal for training autonomous vehicles) and prepare them to compete in the AWS DeepRacer League. We will also get under the hood and teach you how to create your model and reward functions using Amazon SageMaker and how to use tools to help you tune those reward functions and maximize their performance. You can check the event agenda here.
In addition, the AWS DeepRacer simulator provides a tutorial to get you started with reinforcement learning and training your first model. You will then also be able to evaluate and tune your models before racing them in the AWS DeepRacer League. The AWS DeepRacer developer documentation provides additional details on building your first model here and on how to improve your models here. You can also use this github lab to build your model in 50 mins.
Creating your model
When does the AWS Innovate DeepRacer challenge begin? When does it end?
The AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge begins October 1, 2019, 12:01am, and it finishes October 31, 2019, 11:59pm London Time. Interested developers can register now and submit their model in October.
Do I have to build my own model to race?
Yes! For the Virtual Circuit, there are tutorials inside the AWS DeepRacer simulator on how to build your own model to get started. With the tutorials and documentation, you will have everything you need to create your own model. We will also go over the process on October 17 at AWS Innovate Online Conference. Check the event agenda here.
Do I need an AWS DeepRacer car in order to use the AWS DeepRacer simulator?
No. You can train models and evaluate them without owning an AWS DeepRacer car.
Will I be charged for using AWS services?
You can read everything about AWS DeepRacer pricing here.
To get you started with the AWS DeepRacer service console, we provide credits to cover the first seven hours of usage as part of the Free Tier. This is enough to train your first model, evaluate it, tune it, and then enter it into the AWS DeepRacer League. At the end of the first month that you use AWS DeepRacer, your account will receive the following service credits: 65 Simulation Unit hours ($26) for AWS RoboMaker, 10 hours of training ($5.57) on an ML.C4.2XL Amazon SageMaker instance, and $1.50 to cover Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis Video Streams, and Amazon CloudWatch costs. The service credits will be loaded at the end of the month, will be valid for a month, and will be visible on your billing statement. Visit the AWS DeepRacer Pricing page for more details.
You will also benefit from the Free Tiers for other AWS services. If you have never used AWS RoboMaker, you will receive the AWS RoboMaker Free Tier for the first month. Furthermore, on a monthly basis, you will also benefit from the Amazon S3 and Amazon CloudWatch Free Tier.
All participants enrolled in the AWS Innovate DeepRacer Challenge who successfully submit an entry to the AWS DeepRacer League leaderboard will earn a one-time AWS credit of with a $25 value, which they will receive via email by November 15th. This is in addition to the AWS Free Tier credits outlined above. Please see the AWS Promotional Credit Terms and Conditions here.
If I’ve previously participated in AWS DeepRacer before this AWS Innovate challenge, may I race again?
Great to see your enthusiasm! We encourage you to take advantage of your earlier experience and submit some great new entries for the October race.
How many hours a week may I spend on this program?
You can work on your AWS DeepRacer submissions for as long as you’d like. You can submit multiple entries if you’d like to try to improve your lap time and point score.
Where can I read more about the global competition?
By participating in this challenge, you are also racing in the global Virtual Circuit and can compete with others to win a trip to re:Invent 2019, and an AWS DeepRacer (read the AWS DeepRacer League Official Rules here).
