Mackenzie-Kosut_Bio-Pic_round

Over the past 12 years, more startups have built on AWS than any other provider. And as cloud evolves, it also changes the way startups are being built. Today it may only take one person and a few thousand dollars to get an idea off the ground, but you still need the right tools to quickly launch your next big venture. Join us in Cape Town for the keynote to hear AWS Global Startup Evangelist Mackenzie Kosut talk about how to take your idea to market with some of the best business and technical guidance available to entrepreneurs.

Mackenzie will be joined by the disruptors and innovators from within the African startup eco-system, who'll share their stories around how they've adopted AWS technologies to enable scalability, growth and business success.

Featured Speakers include:

  • Anton Van Vlaanderen, Partner - 4di Capital
  • G-J van Rooyen, CEO - Custos Media
  • Omosalewa Adeyemi, Head of Partnerships - Flutterwave

Each breakout session will run for 45 minutes, with the content structured around 2 specific learning paths:

  • Technology Implementation Best Practices for Startups
  • Business Innovation and Go-to-Market for Startups

Each learning path will feature content targeted towards a technically-minded audience, or for entrepreneurs interested in building their business knowledge. Technology and product talks will be presented by AWS experts in collaboration with customers from the region (introductory to intermediate technical level), while our business focused presentations will be delivered by experts from within the eco-system alongside members of the AWS Startup team.

  • Technology Track

    11:15 - 12:00 - Data-Driven Product Management at Scale

Moderator: Christian Spicker, Sub-Saharan Africa Account Manager – AWS

    Featured Startup Speakers:

    • Pia Spratley, Head of Product – Travelstart
    • Martin Vogdt, Chief Product Officer – Jumo

    Location: Congo Room, Level 1

Innovative companies operate in a loop of experimentation and learning that leads to further data-driven iteration. Whether you're introducing a brand new service, or you’re trying to improve a particular feature, it’s crucial that you’re tracking and measuring user behavior. Come and learn from AWS customers on how they’re leveraging the low cost of experimentation on AWS, best practices for A/B testing, their approach to data collection and analysis, and how they prioritize new features.

    13:00 - 13:45 - A crash-course in security best practices

Speaker: Ahmed Gouda, Solutions Architect - AWS

    Location: Congo Room, Level 1

Every startup should build with security and protection of customer data as their number one priority, ensuring services are properly architected, monitored and secured. This session will cover a wide range of best practices from MFA, root accounts, MDM, controlled network access and incident response. You'll learn key principles of how to build a secure organization to protect your data and best practices you should be applying even before your service launches.

    14:00 - 14:45 - AI | ML Services for Developers

Speaker: Herbert-John Kelly, Solutions Architect - AWS

    Location: Congo Room, Level 1

Whether you’re a data scientist, ML researcher, or developer, AWS offers machine learning services and tools tailored to meet your needs and level of expertise. Developers no longer need a data science degree to be able to add intelligence to their application. Learn how you can use a set of pre-trained API-driven AWS services for computer vision, speech, language analysis, and conversational interfaces. For those who wish to dive deeper and build their own models, we’ll also cover Amazon SageMaker - a fully-managed service that enables you to build, train and deploy machine learning models at any scale.

    15:00 - 15:45 - When, how, and if to adopt micro-services

Speakers: Carel van Wyk, Co-founder and Senior Engineer – Luno,  Brad Acar, Solutions Architect - AWS

    Location: Congo Room, Level 1

Microservices are not for everyone! If you're a small shop, a monolith provides a great amount of value and reduces the complexities involved. However as your company grows, this monolith becomes more difficult to maintain. We’ll look at how microservices allow you to easily deploy and debug atomic pieces of infrastructure which allows for increased velocity in reliable, tested, and consistent deploys. We’ll look into key metrics you can use to identify the right time to begin the transition from monolith to microservices.

  • Business Track

    11:15 - 12:00 - GTM for Startups with AWS

Speaker: Claus Verner, Startup Team BDM - AWS

    Location: Orange Room, Level 1

AWS is known for helping startups scale and grow. Join us to learn more about how you can benefit from these programs specifically designed for startups including; AWS Activate, AWS Marketplace for SaaS Startups, Amazon Launchpad and the Alexa Fund to name a few. We’ll outline the ways these go-to-market programs can provide startups with the resources to help accelerate your business, reduce time-to-market and achieve competitive differentiation.

13:00 - 13:45 - How we think about Innovation at Amazon

Speaker: Shayan Sanyal, Startup Team BDM - AWS

    Location: Orange Room, Level 1

In this session we’ll review some of the mechanisms and best practices that help us innovate at Amazon, and go through some of the suggestions on how it applies to startups and particularly AWS customers. The goal is to drive simplicity through a continuous, explicit customer focus. Get insights on how we structure our teams for autonomy and speed, and how we’re 'working backwards' from our customers when deciding where to focus engineering efforts.

    14:00 - 14:45 - Introduction to Fundraising 101

Speakers: Keet van Zyl, Co-founder - Knife Capital, Henri Zietsman, Startup Team BDM - AWS

    Location: Orange Room, Level 1

Should I be raising VC money? Is joining an accelerator/incubator right for my startup? Henri will be hosting renowned venture catalyst and entrepreneur Keet van Zyl, who’ll be offering advice to startups wanting to understand the fundamentals of fundraising. Keet will talk about what attributes they look for when making investment decisions, dispel some of the myths surrounding what it takes to raise funds and provide pointers from his involvement in the early-stage funding ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa.

15:00-15:45 - State of the startup eco-system Panel
