Euronics Hungary Migrates Its SAP Workloads to AWS with Zero Downtime

Known for selling electronics and home appliances, Euronics Hungary uses SAP, an enterprise resource planning software, to manage all its logistics and supply chain, including its 300,000-square-foot warehouse. The company previously ran its SAP workloads on premises. However, unplanned downtime impacted fulfillment and revenue opportunities, especially during peak shopping hours. The company decided to improve the stability of its services by migrating its SAP workloads to AWS. “AWS gives us a flexible system that we can tailor to meet our security requirements with minimum management overhead,” says Balázs Kiss, chief information officer at Euronics Hungary. To bolster its technical skills, Euronics Hungary engaged TC2 Ltd. (TC2), an AWS Partner (more specifically, an Advanced Solution Provider Partner).

Working alongside TC2, Euronics Hungary lifted and shifted its workloads into the cloud. In the first phase, the companies did a proof of concept to determine which AWS services to use. Euronics Hungary chose Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance types that are certified for running SAP workloads, including m6a.xlarge and r6i.24xlarge. “TC2 could quickly scale servers down or up, depending on the results of the testing, so we could achieve perfect ‘rightsizing’ and even boost disk performance on the fly if the task required it,” says Kiss.

During the next two phases, Euronics Hungary’s test and development environments were migrated to AWS. To meet its security requirements, the company uses AWS Security Hub, which automates AWS security checks and centralizes security alerts.

The company also uses Amazon GuardDuty to protect its AWS accounts, workloads, and data with intelligent threat detection. Euronics Hungary relies on AWS Backup—which centrally manages and automates data protection—to implement a robust data protection strategy, with backup frequencies ranging from continuous for critical databases to weekly for servers. For maintaining full visibility, the company adopted Amazon CloudWatch, a service that can observe and monitor resources and applications on AWS, on premises, and on other clouds.

Euronics Hungary, working alongside TC2, migrated its SAP workloads in 9 months. The company has since seen an improvement in the stability, security, and scalability of its infrastructure, helping it maintain smooth operations. “There has been absolutely no downtime or performance drops,” says Kiss.

TC2 provides 24-7 operational support to Euronics Hungary on an ongoing basis. With this support, the company can continue to upskill its teams, modernize its IT systems, and maximize its cloud cost savings. “I have big plans for SAP to use the data warehouse and artificial intelligence capabilities of AWS,” says Kiss. “I’m looking forward to starting new projects, and my team and I have already started to look at other systems to migrate to AWS.”
